We here at Graphic Chemical have been inundated with faxes and e-mails of sympathy from our customers and friends outside of the United States. Artists are, to say the least, a classy bunch - worldwide. Re: John's proposed project Let us know what we can do to help - inks, papers etc. This is a great idea and should go forward. I would like to be included. *** > Instead of anger, forgive and be forgiven. > Brad, I can understand your point of view, but the timing is difficult as we are all too horrified right now and in shock. Two nights before this all happened (the planes missiling into the trade center towers) I had a dream that was so prophetic, I was stunned because I was left feeling the despair that we all feel when we deeply come to understand there are forces in the human mind under the cover of "ideals" that can make us blind to our ability to act out of universal love. That word "love", the impossible? Yet, we all know the feeling. But, what is it that makes love for all become love for an "ideal". This is a force in us all, and until we address that one, this is going to go on and on forever. Forgiving isn't what is needed, so much as understanding where this comes from and educating ourselves to know it's in us all in varying degrees. In the dream I felt the horror and awoke disoriented. There was a terrorist and there was a victim. He was my son hanging so high I could barely see him in the dark. The terrorist said, "I have my trophy." Though police had him handcuffed and he was being taken away, my son (a 6 foot 7 individual) perhaps symbol for the United States, perhaps even the towers themselves (Jeremy was called one of the "twin towers" when he was in high school because he was one of two very tall kids at the school), I felt the despair of a force so great, there is an urgency, not to kill the enemy, but to get to the root of why it happens at all in any form whatsoever. This is the most frightened I have ever been about humanity and what it is capable of. And, yes, I feel also the anger that leads to revenge, but look what's down THAT road. I have been thinking about this idea of doing prints in honor of those innocents who have lost their lives. It may take us awhile to resolve how this should work. Baren already has some structure to allow this to happen. The beauty of the multiple is that as a show, the prints that could come out of this enterprise could be shown in many venues at the same time across the US and abroad. Someone mentioned the idea of a quilt which makes we think of the AIDS quilt. I can see this as a similar thing, as an exhibit of the prints would obviously have the same kind of impact. The recent discussion about giving art away will probably become a moot point in this particular case. We will have to see how things unfold to see how monies raised from this endeavor could benefit victims and their families. I think the Red Cross could also be an organization which could be helped through this. Even though I'm showing Baren work in our galleries this year, I know that I would be willing to a present a show stemming from this tragedy in the coming year. The best way to work these things out is through art - or I should say, that is what works for me. I may begin in anger, but I always end in forgiveness and understanding. Art transports me to that higher level. I had my class yesterday all do "emotional drawings" (I'm sure you've all done this excercize), and then we cut out the various emotions and mounted them on boards with all like kinds together. It helped the students to appreciate the universal mark, and they all said Thank You after class and that they felt better. Too many wars have been fought, and lives lost, because of religious differences - look how many have been lost in NY. I confess that I don't have any loved ones lost in this travesty, but I still believe the best thing is NOT retribution - that will only lead to more lives lost on both sides. The best answer is to turn the other cheek, regardless of your religion, and for each of us make a print.
