I know during the year my daughter was home schooling (1994) , they were coming up with computer-based courses for the villages farther north. Her paper-based options included high school art. I don't know what Alyeska offers presently. The University of Alaska's offerings on its smaller campuses are heavy in "distance learning." If anyone is truly interested, they might consult UA. I consider myself fortunate not to have taken a remote art class. I have taken several "academic" classes remotely, and cannot recommend them. They did not include video, which may have made a difference, but were most comparable to an oversized conference call where the pace dragged due to the disjointed composition. Not only are they tedious but they cost the student more, as there is a "distance fee" tacked onto the regular tuition. Their computer lab classes are basically self-teaching with a lab assistant available for questions. I guess my question is why would anyone who didn't live remotely want to do distance learning. I feel a live instructor is a real treasure. <^><^><^><^><^><^><^><^><^><^><^><^> Michelle Morrell jmmorrell@gci.net http://www.Michelle Morrell.com <^><^><^><^><^><^><^><^><^><^><^><^> ------------------------------ From: barebonesart Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 23:08:58 -0700 Subject: [Baren 15306] Re: Baren Digest V16 #1507 Bill, It has been very interesting to read all the comments about teaching an internet printmaking class. It occured to me that perhaps you might consider combining several aids. The technical things such as rolling out the ink, or mixing the rice paste with the pigment - whichever method you're teaching - might be demonstrated on a video tape.It could be purchased for very little or included in the lab fee. The rest of the class could be more of the art historical, elements of composition, etc., and prints could be sent to the instructor for critique. I've found you have to see these critters in person - - the web just doesn't give enuf info. But, the chat room critique would be good for color, composition, etc. I'm anxious to see what you do with this and how it works out. - Sharri PS - Wanda - please note! I remembered to get rid of the rest of the digest before pouncing on the send button :>) ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V16 #1508 *****************************
