Baren Digest Saturday, 21 July 2001 Volume 16 : Number 1497 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Daniel Dew Date: Fri, 20 Jul 2001 09:21:55 -0400 Subject: [Baren 15202] Help! Oh my, I knew I shouldn't have done it, but I did anyhow. :-( I carved the most intricate cherry woodblock, about 7" x 10" in size. But the wood is only about 3/16th inches thick. You guessed it, after the first run of a reduction series, the wood has warped unbelievably! It has bowed so bad down the middle of the image that I don't think I can print with it the way it is. Any tips? Disgusted with himself in Florida, dan dew ------------------------------ From: David Bull Date: Fri, 20 Jul 2001 22:32:03 +0900 Subject: [Baren 15203] Re: Help! Try soaking the 'inward' warped side with warm water until the thing flattens out, then screwing it down onto the top of your workbench to hold it tight until you finish the print. Most of the content of those five DVDs (they were not all alike) connected in some way to printmaking. But the connection with this month's DVD to printmaking is less obvious. Still, the cover says Printmaking DVD Zine-Living Prints. What I made this month was a "Supplement" - like a "Special", an offshoot of printmaking. It is an interview with Dr. Prithwish Neogy, who was an art historian I met through members of the World Print Council. I interviewed him on the use of new technologies in art education. Anyone who wants a free DVD to "test", and can run a PC/DVD (has a fast PC with a DVD player instead of a CD/ROM player) just send me your mailing address. I'm still testing, making--sort of like cut, print only it's all magical. Bill H. Hi there: You could also glue the board to a piece of 3/4 inch or better plywood or plain plank (at cross grain). Follow David's direction for reducing the warp and when the board is ready, mount it to a new support using Gorilla Glue. Gorilla Glue activates with moisture and so the newly damped back of the board is perfect for the product. Just spread a thin coat of glue on the DRY surface of the supporting board and mount the woodcut. A word of caution, the Gorilla Glue will foam up a bit, as it cures, so either screw down the woodcut to the support or weight the two boards heavily, until the glue is cured. Once the glue is cured, the bond is unbreakable. I do not know of a stronger wood glue than this stuff. It can also be used on stones, metal, etc. This way you do not have to worry about repeatedly stressing your thin woodcut each time you want to run an edition. There is a web site for Gorilla Glue, WWW.gorillaglue.com I have done some plaster cast printmaking and am glad to try to help you find the answers you need. Eli Griggs Charlotte N.C.
