Baren Digest Wednesday, 18 July 2001 Volume 16 : Number 1494 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: John and Jan Telfer Date: Wed, 18 Jul 01 00:30:33 -0000 Subject: [Baren 15189] Monet & Japan Exhibition in Perth Australia Wow, this was awesome!!!! MONET & JAPAN EXHIBITION Today I went to the "Monet & Japan" Exhibition along with hundreds of others this morning. This exhibition is only going to be shown in Canberra, Australia (where it has been) and now Perth Western Australia from 7th July to 16th September. I had no trouble with seeing the 30+ Monets - 6-10 people @ painting, but I also felt as if "I had seen them somewhere before" ( haystacks x 5, waterlillies x 8, Garden at Sainte-Adresse, etc) but I virtually had most of the woodblocks to myself...Utagawa Hiroshige (40 prints), Katsuchika Hokusai(22 prints), Utagawa Kunisada and Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and Suzuki Harunobu, etc with a dozen more at least ...OH, such a grande exhibition for little 'ol Perth!!!! They have produced a heavy 2kg 215 page "Catalogue" of page size reproductions of all the pieces in the exhibition and how Monet is said to have "related" or been inspired by the Japanese woodblock prints of the above prints (maybe some a bit "far fetched" for my liking!) Monet never went to Japan but had an extensive collection of these (that are on display) buying them from traders and friends in Paris. But a great Exhibition. The book "Monet & Japan" National Gallery of Australia, Canberra ISBN 0 642 54129 9 (PAPERBACK) at $29.95 (Australian) ISBN 0 642 54135 3 (Hbk) $69 (Aust) with lots of little coloured thumbnail pictures of the paintings and woodblocks as they compare each one. Pages 77 to 173 are all coloured pages of page size pieces on exhibition. It was good to see the woodgrain of the blocks coming through on a lot of the prints, especially the indigo blue of sky and sea, but it was also a relief to see that even the "experts" can have difficulty applying the colour!! I also bought the book on "Hiroshige - Japan's Great Landscape Artist" by Isaburo Oka. Published by Kodansha International. Tokyo. New York. London (1992). This one 1997 ISBN 4 7700 2121 6 Every page with a coloured picture with lots and lots of closeup details so you can see the woodgrain, the brush marks and sometimes the baren marks...oh what a treasure...I wish they could jump out onto my paper!!! I have left a few more books on the shelf for my next visit, Barbara M. (and not even a Powells here)!!! I'll tell you more on my next visit...I am happy to show anyone around on your visit to Perth, Western Australia (that's on the West Coast)! I've been a lurker for a while now...haven't had much time to even read my digest. But, nevertheless, at this time I come to you all for some help. I'm applying for a fellowship and am working on putting together my resume. Naturally, I want to include my participation in the Baren exchanges. But, I've lost track of where and when the exchanges that I have participated in have been exhibited. Could someone (or maybe a few of you) help me out with this? I'm looking for info on the Dragon Exchange (2000) and Baren Exchanges #5 and #8. For any Pennsylvania Printmakers....Check it out! The PA Council on the Arts offers an Individual Artist Fellowship that awards between $5,000 and $10,000 UNRESTRICTED FUNDS to help with artistic endeavors! And this year is the year for "works on paper"...only comes around every so often! I appreciate any help you can give me! thanks a bunch...and wish me luck! You can email me outside of the Forum if you wish at jandiprints@earthlink.net Jandi Goshert ------------------------------ From: "bemason" Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2001 22:53:16 -0700 Subject: [Baren 15191] print exchanges Jandi, Look here for some of it http://barenforum.org/newsletter/issue05/issue05.html Thanks to Julio who sent it to me.
