And many thanks for her website. For those of us who can't be in New York for the occasion, it's great at least to see examples of some of the work. Again - many thanks and congratulations! It cut very nicely, though not as good as cherry, it held my very fine cuts quite well. Cross grain cutting was not as crisp as I wanted, but it was doable. Then when I went to print, I liked it even more! It held the ink extremely well, giving me nice crisp lines and lots of detail without any hassles. I used a coat of shellac first, then printed away with my cheapo Speedball inks on Sumi paper for a test print and all went excellent. Has anyone ever tried this wood before? dan dew ------------------------------ From: Printmaker Date: Wed, 04 Jul 2001 08:11:57 +1000 Subject: [Baren 15047] Flora Exchange Hi All I checked the sign on page of the #11 exchange this morning and notice that its already full! I also had a little chuckle to myself as I remembered that the sign up was 1st July and logged in and signed up without first seeing the post that advised of the 3pm GMT time restriction. So I had to do it twice. Thinking about 'flora' I was wondering what everyone is going to do? Anyone decided on an image yet? I thought I'd inspire you all with this http://www.acay.com.au/~severn/temporar.htm Its looking like something distinctly Australian for me at the moment, though the goddess Flora after whom they are named also springs to mind. Not decided yet. If you missed out and are still hanging out to do an exchange, the sign-on at PA continues. Size, Oban, theme Illustration, media whatever. Follow the links http://www.acay.com.au/~severn/ All the best Josephine ------------------------------ From: FurryPressII@aol.com Date: Tue, 3 Jul 2001 21:22:26 EDT Subject: [Baren 15048] Re: New Wood speaking of wood generally i like cherry as a good all around plank grain wood but for highly detailed wood cuts esp where you have to cut very thin lines hard maple works well with very sharp tools one of its good points is that it does not splointer to the point when you are cutting with the grain it wants to leave a burr at the end of a cut when i first noticed that i thought it was funny sort of like a burr left in a copper engraving. But it works very well for detailed cuts and small point sized text. i use end grain maple and box wood for wood engraving (i have heard that box can be used for plank grain but the tree is very small. some people use a product called "RESINGRAVE" instead of boxwood but it gives me the willies i rerely use lino but will for secondary colors but plank grain cherry or maple is cheaper and i like the feel better. john of the furry press Ps glad we decided to do flora as i finished the key block for it last week just have to cut a couple of secondary blocks and then print it i am going on a vacation and busmans holiday with a bunch of wood engravers in Seatle next week will print it when i come back ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V16 #1478 *****************************
