Baren Digest Thursday, 7 June 2001 Volume 15 : Number 1448 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Daniel Dew Date: Wed, 06 Jun 2001 10:23:20 -0400 Subject: [Baren 14761] A time to vent Alright you people, this is my turn to vent on a new subject: "artist comments" I love to show off the work of Baren, showing my co-workers and friends our wonderful website. When sitting with someone, looking at all the beautiful prints on display in the Exchange Gallery, it's irritating to have them ask me "what's this one mean?", then I scroll down to the artist comments, and IT'S BLANK! So, I get to sit there and say, "Duh, I don't know". Come on, fork up the info, especially if your print HAS a story or explanation taht is not readily apparent upon just viewing. As Dr. Evil of Austin Powers says, "come on folks, I need the info. Throw me a friggin' bone here". Smile, smile, wink, wink, jsu playing but it would be nice. dan dew ------------------------------ From: James G Mundie Date: Wed, 6 Jun 2001 10:34:09 -0400 Subject: [Baren 14762] exchange theme haikus Many ideas and topics from which to choose a theme for exchanging. Why not combine them: a nude funeral march to a seaside boneyard? Beneath the juniper, Riding Hood holds her lily, lilts a mournful tune. The spray of salt air on naked flesh causes some mild discomfiture. An epic scene as Giant squids frolic nearby, woodcuts aplenty. ~ James Mundie http://missioncreep.com/mundie/index.htm ------------------------------ From: "Tyrus Clutter" Date: Wed, 06 Jun 2001 09:30:33 -0600 Subject: [Baren 14763] Re: A time to vent I did send in comments for my #10 print, but did not when I did the #8 = print. It was not necessarily clear to me what that area was really for = until people started e-mailing me about the content of the print (which is = usually much more difficult to readily understand). We may want to remind = people at the time of sign up for each exchange. Some of you old pros are = well aware of how this whole organization works and I'm afraid that the = vast amounts of newcomers may fumble around for a bit, especially if they = are (the dreaded) lurkers. Congratulations to everyone participating. I needed no explanations, but they were helpful and interesting. The Art speaks for itself. It's mostly the printers who want to know the details of the method, what paper was used, what ink , etc. As for me, if I have to ask what it is or means, it defeats the purpose. Carol Lyons Irvington, NY ------------------------------ From: Printmaker Date: Fri, 08 Jun 2001 08:10:01 +1000 Subject: [Baren 14766] disclaimer Point of clarification At no time did I suggest to Greg that he should not choose to use the gospels for his project, I merely expressed an opinion that I personally would prefer a secular text for such a project, and why. Similarly, my comments re missionaries were an expression of opinion that they do more harm than good and the world would be better off without them, made using Australian modes of expression. Someone said "Let us all remember, that every one has a basic right and freedom to express their opinions and even act upon their belief system " I was exercising that right. It is extremely offensive to me every time that someone mentions God and Chritianity in my presence, especially when they assume that I share their opinions or faith. I do not. My apologies to the list that this discussion should arise from my comments. It was not my intention to start a religious discussion. You probably would have been a "a prime candidate for a witch burning" but as you are now the burner "or more to the point I'd barbeque amissionary anyday, given the opportunity." your effort can be interpreted as working the Holocaust ovens. It doesn't matter who or why persecution is done, it is still persecution and here still in the name of religion. That is what people are reacting to. Bea ------------------------------ From: Jack Reisland Date: Wed, 06 Jun 2001 15:51:30 -1000 Subject: [Baren 14769] Re: disclaimer I agree with Bea that this is not an issue of religion, but of appropriate expression. When you consider posting your opinion "using Australian modes of expression", it might be a good idea to remember that you are addressing an audience composed of people from all around the world, on every continent, and from widely varying backgrounds. Some of these people have led fairly sheltered lives, but some other Baren members have seen first hand the violent results of expressions like yours carried to their extreme ends. It is not safe to assume that everyone reading your colorful comments understand your "Australian mode of expression". But now I am even more confused. By invoking the statement: "Let us all remember, that every one has a basic right and freedom to express their opinions and even act upon their belief system ", are you saying that you have not only the right to express your opinion in any fashion, but also the right to act upon your desire to burn people who hold philosophies with whom you disagree? Jack ------------------------------ From: "Maria Arango" Date: Wed, 6 Jun 2001 19:53:00 -0700 Subject: [Baren 14770] apologies Alas! I am entirely and solely at fault for encouraging the conversation in Baren about this project. I am now standing outside my house, knees on the hot concrete, begging for forgiveness and most of all, for: please-forget-it-and-move-on-ness. I shall be flogged at sunrise, take my word for it. Any and all conversations and lashings concerning missionaries and inquisitions should be off list and fully directed at my private mail box, the raised-catholic Spaniard in the bunch who started it all (yes, catch the dual meaning in that carefully worded phrase). Why not just send me the picture and I will reproduce it in woodcut--that will eliminate all decision making on my part and everyone will be happy and feel safe knowing what is expected. The portfolio will be uniform and can be hung almost anywhere they don't know much about art. See you, Dolores ------------------------------ From: Julianne Date: Wed, 06 Jun 2001 23:53:19 +1000 Subject: [Baren 14775] intro Hi, my name is Julianne I've been lurking/straggling for some time now. I'd of been vocal earlier, though this essay of introduction has delayed me somewhat. I guess if I had something interesting to say it would make it easier. Here goes anyway. I started out painting, bought a second hand etching press - that got me hooked on the multiple image thing. Got a roll of lino at the same time as the press & have cut a few images in that. Got interested in woodcut & engraving after receiving a supply catalogue from MES & lurking about Baren, cutting my teeth on your projects. I cut the snake project along with you all, and have my endangered species image ready to cut - trouble is I can't work up the courage to print them - Guess I have relief printers block. (though 3 small children and a part-time uni course could have something to do with it). All up I have 3 woodcuts on Japanese maple waiting to be printed. It's semester break soon - I have etching ink, but I'd rather use an ink more suitable to relief printing for my first attempt. Can anyone tell me. Would it be best to invest in relief ink or lithographic ink - and why. I'm thinking of going with Graphic Chemicals, and I'd rather be an oily one I think - is that a good choice? Does anyone know if all the colours have *** / **** ratings? I tend to avoid fugative colours if I can. I'd be grateful for any infomation. To Gregory Robison - yes - interest from me. Myth/fantasy/fairytales/nursery rhymes gets my vote. I'm sorry I can't find the particular e-mail, though a week or so ago, someone was asking for printing projects for school kids. I've not tried it, but I read somewhere the idea of scratching your drawing into a slab of plaster of paris and then rolling that up with ink & printing it. I imagine it would print better using oil based inks, as it might suck out some of the moisture in water based inks, and possibly disintergrate somewhat? Finally I'd just like to defend myself as an Australian, born and raised. In reference to Josaphine's comment:- 'Similarly, my comments re missionaries were an expression of opinion that they do more harm than good and the world would be better off without them, made using Australian modes of expression.' 'Australian modes of expression' huh? I don't speak in that 'mode' - - I wish for me and the large number of other inocent Australians, to be left out of that one. Hope I haven't said too much on my first date. Sure was comfortable in my lurker's chair. Julianne. ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V15 #1448 *****************************
