Baren Digest Wednesday, 6 June 2001 Volume 15 : Number 1446 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Shireen Holman Date: Tue, 05 Jun 2001 09:15:32 -0400 Subject: [Baren 14740] Re: Gospels Greg, I am tentatively interested in your collaborative project. There's been a lot of discussion about the use of religious subjects, but I don't see that as a problem. I think there are a lot of passages from the Bible that people use in every day life without even realizing where they're from. Sort of like lines from Shakespeare that have become part of everyday sayings - one day you read a Shakespeare play and say "Oh, that's where that's from!" Christianity over the centuries has become so much a part of Western civilization, that you don't have to be Christian or religious to be firmly routed in that tradition. I myself am neither Christian nor religious. I grew up in India - my family background is partly Hindu and partly Christian. I admire a lot of great art from both traditions. I think one can find truths in any religion, even if you don't adhere to many of the beliefs. Whether I would want to join or not depends on what the timing and schedule end up being. You mentioned that the timetable might be 12 months - did you mean a year from now or a year from the time when there is a final decision on who is working on what passage? I asked men to submit poems as though they were disciples of Mary Magdalene. It was an interesting bunch of poems. When the book was finished, I had a party at my house and invited all the men and gave them each a copy of the book. I guess some people would be offended by the book because of how the men interpreted their role as her disciple, or teller of her story. I wrote a poem, too, as though I were Mary Magdalene. Some tried to save her from ways they believed wrong. Some worshipped her, others romanticized her, one even became her worried mother. But the woodcut part (in keeping with our subject of woodcuts) is I illustrated some of the poems with woodcuts. In those days I had scrap wood and ungainly tools and each woodcut looked different according to the wood used. I had no computer, either, so had to have the book copied at Kinko's on paper I bought specially for the book. It was much easier doing the Vampyr book because by then I had scanner and Mac and laser printer. For the Magdalene book I had half tones made of my woodcuts through Kent State University and pasted these up on the copy that was to be photo copied. The books were okay and even got a decent review in a publication called Ohio Writer. ------------------------------ From: "Patricia" Date: Wed, 6 Jun 2001 00:43:25 +1000 Subject: [Baren 14742] Re: Baren Digest V15 #1445 charset="iso-8859-1" Maybe a MM pritnexchange could be arranged? Great work. I have only even done monoprints, but am interested in the barenforum and learning woodblock printing. I printed the articles by David Bull from the internet and look forward to trying this technique. I am currently painting Sumi-e with the Midwest chapter of Sumi-e Society of America and so Japanese woodblock printing fits right in. Thanks Julio for putting together this exhibit and to all of the participating artists. I'll be watching the e-mail forum and looking forward to when I can participate. I'd be a prime candidate for a > witch burning....or more to the point I'd barbeque a > missionary anyday, given the opportunity. I have to say. That is a very SCARY statement. Besides it would not be the first time that a Christian missionary has been murdered. It seems that intolerance as an entity is nondiscriminatory. Let us all remember, that every one has a basic right and freedom to express their opinions and even act upon their belief system as long as they are respectful and sensitive to their fellow living creatures. You know who didn't believe that: Hitler & Nero, just to name two. As far as atrocities committed by the Christian "Church" are concern...please don't blame Christ or the things he taught for the things that MEN did...for political, social and economic reasons. Those things .....the Crusades, Conquistador exploitation of South America and Carribean, slavery ...etc....were totally anti-Christ like. And I go so far as to say that they were done by many men (and women) who could not have possibly BELIEVED in the teachings of Christ, let alone be his followers even though they said the were. They were LIARS and EVERY faith has them. Also, know that the 'institution' of the Church and the the body of believers known as the body of Christ are two totally different things. So we let us all consider what we mean when we even use the term 'christian' either in insult or compliment. I am happy to continue this convo off list with any and everyone. This is my first communication on Barens. I have been a lurker in the closet for a long, long time. But I have enjoyed every minute of it! I have never carved or printed a woodcut, so I have had nothing to contribute. Although recently I have begun pursuing linocuts and have 6 going at various stages. Does anyone remember the advertisement in Barens for an intaglio press a few months ago? I bought that press and had it shipped from California back to the East coast. It was still bolted to the original skid and had hardly been used. It weighs about 1500 pounds and moving it was quite an ordeal. Actually I am responding to a statement that Josephine made regarding missionaries. She said ". . .I'd barbeque a missionary anyday, given the opportunity." Such a statement is a chilling reminder of the Great Holocaust. I was shocked! Many of my family members and friends are missionaries serving on the continents of Africa, Asia, and South America. Some are giving free medical and dental help to those living in third world countries. Others are dealing with AIDS victims, Leper prevention, and a number of other related issues. Literacy teaching, agricultural training, and general education are areas that many of these missionaries address. These folks give of themselves at great personal sacrifice with little or no recognition. In my opinion, such intolerance has no place in Barens. For those local folks who may have visited during the first week of the show...you were probably wondering (maybe not!) where the heck are those darn snakes that Julio keeps talking about ? Actually, the did not go on display till recently (show opened 5/23) due to problems with the display panels. Unlike last year where I displayed all the dragons on one huge 40X60" frame...this year due to limited space and a larger number of cards... I went for a multi frame approach. The library supplied a free-standing 4X4' panel which was a challenge to accomodate to my plans. After several failed attempts at possible solutions...and many trips to the library.....I felt back on an old design used by Frank Lloyd Wright back in 1908 for a Chicago Art Institute exhibit of Japanese Surimono. The snake prints are up now...each frame happily wiggling about suspended from wire supports that reach to the very top of the "gray" display panel. Too bad I could not find green ribbons or a large bonsai tree! For those near or visiting Chicago...we must try to get a Baren get together...I think the appropriate time could be later in June (22nd, 23rd ? ) when Sarah Hauser comes into town from NY for her solo at WomanMade Gallery....Sharen, Dolores, John, Sarah....anyone else interested ? thanks for all the members for your kind words and for your work....Julio ------------------------------ From: "Garth Hammond" Date: Wed, 6 Jun 2001 06:21:32 -0600 Subject: [Baren 14758] Re: Exch #11 charset="iso-8859-1" Maria Black "ducks" "rock" "Sepulcheral" winds "bare" "Printed" "paper" "flowers" dance Garth ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V15 #1446 *****************************
