Just in case you = don't know about this sight, they have a great selection. When I questioned one, he said that it was essentially an unlimited edition but the h/p indicated that it was "hand printed". He numbered his prints h/p 1, h/p2 etc. I will add that, although the editions were unrestricted, the large (and expensive) prints had sold in numbers of about 20 at that time. A novel way of numbering, but the guy was very clear and honest with his clients about what they were getting - so np problem! I live in East TN...near Knoxville, but I will be in Chicago for two weeks soon and I suppose I am more likely to find help there...in fact I am guessing that the Durer print in question was originally purchased by my father there or possibly in Flint, MI. I do know that my father bought it for around $200 or $300 back in late 1950's. Finally!!! some progress!!! Thank you all again, Catherine ------------------------------ From: Jim Bryant Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 15:55:01 -0700 Subject: [Baren 13667] Re: ?Durer? I like to look at the auction houses when looking for the value of a print. You must of course consider the number of prints in existence, the condition of your particular print, and how often it is reproduced in catalogs, etc. but auction houses are a good comparative reference for these things--check out this link: http://search.sothebys.com/browse/viewLot/lotDetail.jsp?LOT_ID=4XDT jim- ------------------------------ From: Cucamongie@aol.com Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 21:13:13 EST Subject: [Baren 13668] Paper Eli,if you're going to be printing hanga-style, then you need something stronger and thicker than the Kitakata. The Yamaguchi paper is pricey but prints so well, it's really worth the money if you can swing it. Nishinouchi from McClain's is nice but much thinner paper and more difficult to print smoothly than the Yamaguchi. McClain's Kizuki hanga is expensive and comparable to the Yamaguchi paper. Hiromi paper has some nice papers too. Their hanga-shi is quite cheap and prints very well for proofing, and they have some more expensive kozo papers that are nice, they have a little book of samples that is either cheap or if you catch the right person in the right mood there, free! Tell them (and McClain's if you call them) what type of printing you're doing, etc. good luck and have fun!
