Many oil based inks used for etching and relief printing have some driers in them. Like any additive, however, a little may be good, but a lot is horrible. The discussion on driers has missed the point on what each of the driers do. In general a cobalt drier dries from the top down, so your surface is dry to the touch before it's dried all the way through. A Japan Drier dries from the inside out, so your surface is the last thing to dry. Most printmakers use the Cobalt - it is more readily available, less costly (if my failing memory serves me) and somewhat more predictable. For additional information contact Graphic Chemical & Ink. Re: the haloing problem mentioned earlier. Haloing is almost always a function of excessive oil (in this case, linseed). The pigment can only absorb a given amount of oil, after that the oil cannot be absorbed and held, so it migrates from the ink leaving the oily halo around the image area. For those of you confused about the *snake* discussion - go here: http://www.geocities.com/pedrobot2000/snake.html If you don't have access to the www - it is an exchange of small snake prints. The year 2001 is the "Year of the Snake". A hearty welcome to all of the new Baren members! And a reminder to everyone to please only quote a couple of lines from the message you are responding to. If in doubt as to what [Baren] is all about, go here: http://www.barenforum.org/ For more information on hanga (Japanese woodblock printing) and lots of other thing go here: http://woodblock.com/ >From these two sites, you can visit many members' web sites, review books, etc. Enjoy! In this instance its a bunch of prints of snakes that are being exchanged by around 50 odd people around the world, see http://www.geocities.com/pedrobot2000/snake.html for more info. As a matter of fact when you see my print you will see a hell snake and so it may be fair to say that a hell snake is the print that I'm editioning in between of typing this on my confuzer. ciao L ;-P ------------------------------ From: Legreenart@cs.com Date: Sun, 17 Dec 2000 22:31:12 EST Subject: [Baren 12514] Re: Baren Digest V13 #1247 Just to remind everyone that I am inviting every baren member to send snake, dragon, or snake and dragon prints. It does not need to be an exchange print. These will exhibit and sell in the Baren Snake and Dragon Exhibition to be held January and February at Stonemetal Press. Please send envelope or reusable tube, and return postage. (just send the same amount it costs to send to us, this is usually what it costs to return it, or internationally, a return postal coupon from your post office, or anything that works for you EXCEPT a UPS or Fed Ex "call tag". ) These prints do not have to be framed, but should be signed, and priced for sale if you want to sell them (we hope you will, sales will help us pay the cost of the show.) Sales price should be what you want to get in U. S. dollars plus 30% for the studio's commission. I will exhibit my own exchange prints, but will not sell them, unless the printmaker sends a decond, priced one for sale. I want small prints, I think I set the limit at 11x 14 inches. Once again, I would like to encourage all Baren members to participate with as many prints that you want to send, as long as their is a snake or dragon in the print(s) somewhere. We intend to show everything you send. (However, Our rules say we do not show work that contains rotting flesh, or insults. Nudity is O.K.).
