Thank you.>> A chop is carved from stone or ivory and used in addition to the signature on Oriental paintings, usually stamped with red pigment. It is used more or less like the modern day rubber stamp. It was also used by collectors to mark paintings they owned, each owner over the years applying his seal [chop mark] to the painting. You have probably seen pictures of famous old Chinese paintings with very many seals of collectors on them. I'm very much interested in water-based printmaking. Until now I've been a wordless member of baren-asahi who's been enjoying reading the digests for nearly a year. I've been working in etching and monotype but now can't resist trying woodcut again. I took a wonderful course in woodcut (oil-based ink) several years ago at UNM-Taos. Awhile back, I read that two Bareners had work in the "On/Of Paper" show at Adams State College in Alamosa, CO. My collage of etchings was accepted, too. In case those two Bareners didn't get to see the show, it was terrific! Almost all of our 50 states were represented by at least one artist - the beautiful gallery at ASC is skylit and spacious - the work, both 2-d and 3d-d was unusual, varied and well presented. It was an honor to have baeen included. I think your organization is great!Naomi ------------------------------ From: marco@athomefaraway.com Date: Fri, 01 Dec 2000 09:42:54 +0000 Subject: [Baren 12295] Re: Baren Digest V13 #1231 x-mac-creator="4D4F5353" > Barbara M. said: > > I cannot believe how much I learned going twice. Just two put my 4 cents, Graham's workshop was extermely valuable. After having been at two of them there is not a day I print where I do not find myself thanking the powers that be that convinced me to go and take this wonderful workshop. It has proven itself really pricelesss. And the people and spirit that I found there refreshing and truly inspiring. Marco flavio ps. I live in San Francisco and I know the shop that makes stone stamps (somebody called it a :chop") in Chinatown if anybody wanted to know. It is on Grant street, about 4 blocks after the Chinatown door, on the left hand side, they have many statuettes on displays made with the same material. A very attractive red-ocre-orange variegated translucent stone. ------------------------------ From: owner-baren Date: Sat, 2 Dec 2000 14:31:51 +0900 Subject: [none] Date: Fri, 1 Dec 2000 22:01:06 -0500 From: Gary Luedtke Subject: [Baren 12296] Chops For those of you interested in chops, try this site, < http://www.chinesesprout.com/store/ServicesChops.html > Also check out the Sumi-e Society site, don't happen to have the url for that at hand but a quick search will turn it up, there's a little information on seals there too.
