Mary Azarian has been a favorite of mine for decades. Hers was the only art work in my house! Her early woodcuts have a feeling of the medieval woodcuts, but softer and sweeter. She received the presigious Caldecott Award, the "Best in Show" for children's book illustration, for "Snowflake Bentley" in 1999. It is a beautifully designed and executed book with a great Vermont story! For years she has illustrated the Cook's Seed Catalogue, making it the loveliest catalogue around. I have tried, in vain, to find her work online. I'd love it if she had a website. She wins award after award. There's a catalog called "The Cook's Garden" that is filled with her illustrations. I can't believe how prolific she is. * * * I have a question to ask people who mat their own work. Is there a mat cutter for "dummies". Which kind would give endless perfect results for a person with a wobbly hand? * * * > I have been printing > life-sized figures this past year, combining them on large panels, > approximately 6ft x 25ft. I think we'd all love to hear about this. If these are lifesize figures (complete figures?), what are you printing on (paperwise) and how do you go about it? Would there be a press bed long enough to do a lifesize figure, or will you be you doing them in sections? * * * Though I have sent out a message to all the participants, and Dave did mention it here on Baren last week, I'm giving you the link so it will be easier for you to go have a look at the Baren #6 window exhibit at Kent/Geauga. If you've been there, seen that, then disregard. But for those who go, when you get to the webpage, scroll wayyyy down on the left to "Ohio Exhibition" and click on it. Then on the right the two photos and explanation will appear. http://barenforum.org/activities/activity_frame.html * * * Catherine, I finally figured out how to access your site by taking off the word "index" and whatever followed. I admire your Night Mare very much. You might be interested in this site if you like woodcuts as horses. When you get there, make sure you click on "Illustration" in the left hand menu. It will take you to a page of her illustrations, and if you scroll way to the bottom you will find a series of woodcut horses. She used to live here and was a friend of mine who moved to California a year ago. I've seen her paintings of horses and they are bold and imaginative and huge! http://www.dobayart.com/ Gayle ------------------------------ From: Wanda Date: Tue, 07 Nov 2000 07:31:02 -0700 Subject: [Baren 12029] Re: windows, paper, etc Bea, how is Chinese printing different from Hanga? Besides using unsized paper, that is. I'm looking forward to receiving your print in the Comedy exchange, as well as everyone else's. I like Misterart for Arches 88 - you can't beat the prices! For the oily stuff, of course. Although I have found you can use Stonehenge for hanga, but it seems odd, as it it much heavier than Japanese papers. Well, it's a bit slow to be honest. To be absolutely forthcoming, part of that is my fault because I have been too busy the last couple of weeks to sort the two most recent packages I received -- but that will be rectified shortly. I did have word from one of our members that new prints are on the way, so I hope that some of those folks who have been patiently waiting all this time will finally have enough prints to fill their package and I can send some prints back out into the post. In the meantime, what we really need are more prints! C'mon folks, send some of those suckers in so we can really get this thing rolling. All the details can be found at the main page at http://barenforum.org by clicking on "SwapShop". Cut, print, send! Could you also send me your web site so I can view > your prints Jerelee@main.nc.us I'm sorry if it came across condescendingly. It's just that after finding so many people that did not know in TN, where I was for 10 years, I found that it helped if I either demonstrated or had my woodblocks with me. I liked sharing the process with other people By the way, since I, myself, am self-taught, my woodblocks are like flat sculptures. I use 2" thick tulip (yellow) poplar from a tree that I bought from my next-door neighbor that is about 18" wide. They are so beautiful and if I do multiple colors, they are still all one piece. Hand burnishing with oil-based inks leave them with a polished effect. I don't carve the other side because I have plenty of wood and, as I said, I view the blocks themselves as sculptures. (Once on a trip with a friend to Minneapolis, we stopped at Taliesin East to tour Frank Lloyd Wright's house. In the living room, there is a Japanese woodblock on an easel. I dropped on my knees in front of it to look at it, and suddenly realized everyone else had gotten real quiet. I embarassedly explained I was a printmaker. But I would do it again in a heartbeat!) I don't do a key block and color blocks, puzzle, or the reduction method. Up until now I have worked out other ways to compensate, and am still trying other ideas. My prints have really moved into a monoprint level because I like "playing" in my inking. I'm in Baton Rouge, LA where I teach mosaics and concrete sculpture to supplement my printmaking. My websites are: http://www.bropps.com/gallery/stevens/index.htm and http://www.natureartists.com/ where you look under my name Catherine Lee Stevens in the artists' directory. ------------------------------ From: "Bea Gold" Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 15:59:54 -0800 Subject: [Baren 12034] Re: windows, paper, etc charset="iso-8859-1" Wanda I am learning this new way of working from Ray (Vermont) Hudson and we wrote it up for the next Baren-Suji. This is an informal open call theme show, for Baren members. Work does not have to have been a part of the postcard exchanges. Size limit 11 x 14inches. (It is supposed to be fun for me to run, I am not interseted in alot of rules here.) That means that we plan for all work meeting theme and size limits to be exhibited, unless we run out of space, but we reserve the right not to show work for any reason, and will return unsold work if return information and shipping cost is included. (We do have a rule that we don't show work demeaning or cruel to a person or group, or containing unsanitary organic matter, or if artist is disrespectful to us or our audience.) We have a non-profit print studio with gallery. We are in an art complex in an art area that does first Friday art walks. We should get a few hundred visitors. Artists should send their work with return postage and envelope or package. Work does not have to be framed for this show. Please label with printed name clearly on the piece. The artist may price the work to be sold, if it sells, we will keep 30% of the price the artist put on it, and mail payment to the artist within 45 days. But I did it because it was about facing fear. We all have our own personal fears. My own at the time was about becoming an artist. Since then, I have grown so much and faced so many other personal issues that I simply have to laugh at that fear. And I have found that is a good response to fear: laugh. And thanks for trying so hard to reach my site: "Catherine, I finally figured out how to access your site by taking off the word "index" and whatever followed." I didn't know that I was giving out a bad address! I was only going by what appears on my computer on my home page. I tried to access the website for your friend, www.dobayart.com and couldn't download after I got to the main page; I kept losing the connection.
