Yuri, I ate dinner right across the street from your daughters exhibit last night on our first thursday art walk. I wish I had know she was showing work at Robert Cananga's gallery. He is such a nice man, so she is in good hands. It is a tiny gallery, but usually has interesting work. I will try to get in to see it this month. I'm glad I didn't get into Exchange #7, because I don't like that kind of action. I don't like being forced. Forced? How can anyone be forced when they signed up for the exchange three months prior? They made a commitment to provide 31 prints on a specific date three months in advance. Forced? Strongly encouraged maybe, but not forced. dan dew ------------------------------ From: barbara patera Date: Fri, 03 Nov 100 09:05:50 Pacific Daylight Time Subject: [Baren 11963] Re: Sarah's show Hi Sarah, Wish I lived close enough to come to the opening...... Congratulations to her! I was just thinking about you last night, as I finished carving an image on one of the small blocks. It really is nice to carve. Yes, I think 5' by 5' will be big enough for most of us! :-) Let me know prices when you get the wood. I am interested in some for hanga, about 8x10 and 10x13 inches, not feet. I must get in & see your daughter's work in person! Wanda ------------------------------ From: Wanda Date: Fri, 03 Nov 2000 09:48:17 -0700 Subject: [Baren 11965] Re: Birch plywood again, etc Oops! Sorry about that - meant to go to Yuri personally, as his was meant to go to me personally. But, if any of you are interested in trying some Siberian Birch! It really is nice stuff. Cuts a little like shina, but has more substance that shina. Well, you just have to try it! Wanda ------------------------------ From: Graham Scholes Date: Fri, 3 Nov 2000 09:47:01 -0800 Subject: [Baren 11966] Devil's Advocate I would not be in favour of have a contest amongst the baren members. The list server is a special and unique forum that see NO competition. There is a wonderful generousity and willingness to share ideas. This enables each person to grow and expand there knowledge. It is hard work that is the key of growth for an artist. Awards do nothing to ad to this objective. Only three people are happy. The first, the second, and the third place, winners Everybody else ..... please exuse the expression..... is P'ed off because of the rejection. In the adjudication of Arts there is very little objectivity, if any, and comes down to a great deal of subjectivity in the choice of awards. It matters not what level of expertise you thing you have employed to do the job. Proof of this is how one piece of work is rejected from a competition and yet gets top honours at the next competition. If it hasn't happened to you yet..... it possibly will if you enter enough competitions. I do not see how issuing awards will improve what we have got going now. - -----------------------snip------------------------------- Based on the feedback of 23 postings, only 3, in part, got personal. ------------------------------ From: Ruth Oprean-Cardillo Date: Fri, 3 Nov 2000 10:39:25 -0800 (PST) Subject: [Baren 11967] Re: Birch plywood again, etc Hi...a low profile Baran member... where do you purchanse Siberian Birch? I will be glad to answer all your questions regarding this matter. My e-mail: yuri@forestmachines.com tel/fax 541-342-3068 Some of my company's information on that material you can find at http://www.forestmachines.com/plywood.html Note: All prices for 4"x6" and 5"x7" blocks will be reduced 20% for quantities more than 12 pcs on November 15th. We don't charge for handling, just for shipping whatever it will cost. I will let you informed on prices for larger blocks when the container arrives from Vladivostok to Seattle when we will know for sure all expenses involved. We do our best in order to reduce already low prices . Yes, Graham, it's practically the same plywood as Baltic. The only thing is that we have our blocks made from top-grade 100% Birch plywood. No "apple core", no air, no knots or spots on the surface. You not always have the same quality at the lumber yards. In addition, they usually charge $1 for more than 2-3 cuts. It's very difficult to cut Birch plywood into smaller pieces. You always get some scratches on one side. In order to give a possibility to printmakers, especially to students to use both sides of the blocks, we hired couple Siberian workers to polish those areas by hand. So, we get a very smooth surface on blocks and less two Russian unemployed. I will be glad to know how many of you would use both sides of the block. Maybe, we don't have to do this on all blocks if it's not as important. Thus, the price per block could be reduced. It has really been fun reading all the verbage pro and con and up and down. Baren is a very special entity, nothing else like it anyplace. (Oh, Maria, you left out Northwest Print Council NWPC in your list of organizations! - or were we NPC? - but we are exclusive - you have to live in the beautiful Northwest USA/Canada to be an artist member. BUT, you can be an associate member, support printmakers, get a print - etc. go to www.art2u.com and click on NWPC). Anyway, what I'm rattling on about is the wonderful exchange of ideas, so refreshing after all this politcal garbage we USA'ers have been subjected to these many weeks. Thank you Graham, you little devil. Here's a wonderful quote I ran across today - "Most artists don't daydream about making great art - they daydream about having made great art."
