At any rate, my sumi teacher, Koho Yamamoto, who is an amazing, great, energetic woman in her 80's, was filmed by Japanese television recently, and the program will be shown in Japan on these dates, for our baren friends in Japan: the channel is NHK In Okinawa the program will be shown November 10 rrom 7:35-8pm Everywhere else in Japan, it will be shown Dec. 17, 9am She's Japanese, learned sumi while in the concentration camps in California. She's a wonderful teacher, so I think some of you may enjoy seeing this. I know they show stuff on Japanese television on some stations here in the states, but who knows when it will air here. I should be getting a tape eventually, so anyone who wants to borrow the tape after I get it, can contact me off list. best wishes all Sarah ------------------------------ From: "Bea Gold" Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2000 09:16:17 -0700 Subject: [Baren 11829] Re: Baren Digest V13 #1187 charset="iso-8859-1" Sharen, thanks for the page for Graphic Chemical - I loved this part for printing woodblocks. "Printing block or relief prints is a field unto itself. It can be as elaborate or as simple as you want. The simplest way would be to take 15-20 sheets of newsprint and place them in a pile on a smooth floor. Over this lay a clean piece of printing paper or cloth. Then place the block to be printed, ink sidedown, on the paper. This should then be covered with another piece of paper or cloth. The printer then "walks" on the block, taking care to exert even pressure on all areas of the block. Once finished, all of the materials are removed in reverse order, peeling the print from the block. While it may take a little practice to perfect the technique, you'll find that it works well. It doesn't matter if you choose to do it barefoot, in stocking feet or with a size 10 brogan. Some printers find that a felt pad works better than the newsprint under the block. Experimentation will lead you to the version of this technique that works best for you." How about it Maria? Maybe your three Las Vegas printmakers and some new ones would equal the weight of your car. Anyone printing this way?
