Baren Digest Friday, 20 October 2000 Volume 13 : Number 1186 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Elizabeth B. Atwood" Date: Thu, 19 Oct 2000 13:53:56 -0500 Subject: [Baren 11798] workbench Cate.............Check out my entry in the encyclopedia under Technical Notes. The workbench made from a drafting table can be used as a complete printing station......with the advantage of being tilted down and put away.......also, can be raised to any level for stand-up work. Working in one's kitchen is not a bad idea.....until you earn a studio. We have all started somewhere!..........ElizA ------------------------------ From: "Kinzua" Date: Thu, 19 Oct 2000 16:23:04 -0400 Subject: [Baren 11799] Re: Baren Digest V13 #1185 charset="Windows-1252" Of paints and print studios: Hello, Thanks for the paint suggestions. I think it might be the nature of the beast that most textile paints dry a little to fast to give me time to ink a large collagraph plate. I get most of my paints at Pearl or from Dick Blick. I will call Golden. I've notice a flood of new all-surface paints all the sudden so the search goes on. Regarding the studio issue. I have one of my studios in a spare bedroom too. I got a big cloth painters drop cloth to cover the floor and rug. Not the plastic ones, they're too slippery. When I need to clean the place up for a studio visit or (horrors!) to turn it into a guestroom for courageous visitors, I just whip the thing up and throw it in the closet. I made myself a big printing table that sounds like what you need. Just made it out of a big piece of plywood and saw horses that I made really tall. Mine's padded because I use it for printing fabric and I like to stand up while I do it. That's in my barn. I have another one that folds up in my apartment studio and I use that with a bench hook for carving linoleum, ah, er, I mean wood. But I notice that the folding one is getting a little shaky from over-use. You can see both on the studio page my website, sort of. Graham complained "I have noticed for the past several months more and more blah blah blah about etching and related problems. We should stay focused on woodblock printmaking as this forum is design for that purpose and attracts like people. There are other listserver forums, and if not then someone should go and set one up, to deal with the sport of etching and engraving problems." Not a problem Graham. ANyone who wants to chat about non-woodblock methods is very welcome over on Print Australia. The more the better I say and lets keep it informal too! Print Australia draws the line at digital stuff, but any and all other methods are encouraged for discussion. http://www.acay.com.au/~severn/discuss.htm For those who are not already members or participants in the exchanges over there, the above URL will take you to the instructions on how to join. I might add that those exchanges are for prints in all methods too. That way, Graham can BLAH BLAH BLAH about woodblock in peace *grin* Josephine ------------------------------ From: barebonesart Date: Thu, 19 Oct 2000 10:50:57 -0700 Subject: [Baren 11801] Re: Baren Digest V13 #1185 Subject: Spare bedroom Cate, You might try just glueing some small pieces of carpet along the edge of your table so it won't mark the walls. I know I sound like I work for Green Drop Inks, (I don't) but they are terrific for both relief &, pardon the term, intaglio printing. They are waterbase and you can get a tack reducer to modify them to your needs. www.safeink.com They can be used like oil based inks, I've never tried them for Eastern style printing, but they might work for that, too. I hope the list would allow members to maybe ask questions but the answers could come off line so others will not be botherd by it.
