Baren Digest Tuesday, 17 October 2000 Volume 13 : Number 1182 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Jean Eger" Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2000 09:48:34 -0700 Subject: [Baren 11741] non-profits charset="iso-8859-1" Re: non-profits, As I said, the CSP practiced just-in-time cash flow to the journal, which took up 99 percent of the organization's resources, because we paid the editor and the printer. Scott Berglin, of KB etching press (now distributed by Daniel Smith) was the main fund-raiser. The board polled the members of the CSP and found that they didn't want all the resources of the organization going to the journal, which they thought was an excellent journal, by the way. The journal now has guest editors. Some members exited the board and leadership went to a man with previous experience with a non-profit organization, who was wisely more afraid of bankruptcy than of the hazards of demanding financial responsibility from the factions. I am hoping he will be able to find the organization a location at the Presidio, but realistically, the organization has been functioning as a volunteer group for many years, and having an office would mean paying an employee again, which means generating income. If anyone can do it, Dan Robeski can do it. He heads up a wonderful non-profit art gallery in Vallejo, which has hosted many printmaking shows, and he is an excellent printmaker. I still participate in shows, but I have been off the board for several years, so I don't know what is going on anymore. Graham, I'd like one of the Barens you were talking about in a recent post, so keep me posted! Congratulations Kat on the PrintAlliance exhibit. I have a piece up in a show called On/Of Paper at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado - I just got the announcement cards and there is at least one other Barener in the show, David Molhallatee, there are probably others there too, I haven't had a chance to check all the names on the card. best wishes all, Sarah ------------------------------ From: Graham Scholes Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2000 22:45:05 -0700 Subject: [Baren 11744] John Root's baren >Graham, I'd like one of the Barens you were talking about in a recent post, >so keep me posted! John Root and I had a jaw (meeting) tonight and we kicked around some ideas about improving what he had made for me. Things are looking good. John will be in touch with everybody on this forum with all the details and timing. Place your orders as John is on the server. Bye the bye..... I mentioned months ago about the way to simplify tying on the bamboo husk. Well to night we kinda broke the husks on a baren so I will be having to put a new one on and will show my technique. It is amazingly simple but amazingly effective. Until then..... Grace Butcher, Editor for the magazine, says this is what they are looking for, artwise: There is a cover contest entry: they are looking for a photo, drawing, design of any sort that relates, by any stretch of the imagination, to the magazine's title. (woodcuts are great for this) 5 x 7 format black and white, good contrast #30 prize for winning entry In addition to the cover, winning artist's work will be published throughout the magazine. Send up to six pieces. Please include a cover letter with brief biographical data. All submissions must be accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope (full amount of postage) for notification and return of materials; otherwise, they will be discarded. The Listening Eye is published once a year in the late summer/early fall. For queries and correspondence, you may write to graceb@geocities.com But submissions, of course, must be sent by regular mail only: Kent State University at Geauga 14111 Claridon Troy Road Burton, Ohio 44021 - --Gayle ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V13 #1182 *****************************
