Are you still interested in a baren. Inside would require a fan in a window over the acid. In other words lots of ventilation. When the acid is not in use keep it covered. Don't for goodness sake add good acid to old acid you are throwing your money away. Incidentally the acid I'm talking about is nitric. I've not used ferric chloride because you have to put the plate in the acid upside down and I find this not useful. To dispose of the acid put baking soda into it until the acid stops bubbling. It's not caustic when the bubbles disappear. For 35 years I have been putting the spent acid down the same drain. Nothing ever happened to the pipes. I may be in Berkeley at thanksgiveing time so if it's possible we may get together. I may not bite as deep as most etchers or something but all I do is rock the tray while etching and I am not sure that even that would be required. Most of my bites are less than 15 minutes. I'm excited to tell you that a mixed media print of mine, _Room with a View_ (viewable at http:/www.u.arizona.edu/~katherip/rwav.html) has been selected to be in a travelling show from 2001-2003, sponsored by the American Print Alliance (http://www.printalliance.org/). The show is called "On/Off/Over the Edge," and it has at least four venues set up already (they ask that printmakers help them seek out more interested galleries for the tour). I, too, am interested in seeing some humor visit Belfast; just tell me what I can do to help make it happen. Love <3 & Lint * ! I did a really dumb thing in that I used what I thought was a steel tray. When I cleaned out my folks house after my Dad's death I brought home a perfectly sized tray, so I thought. However, immediately upon submerging my first plate in it, the acid turned chrome yellow and the fumes were overwhelming. Somehow I managed to remove the plate, pour the acid back into the bottle and drag the bottle out to the driveway before I lost consciousness. I don't think I was out very long and when I awoke I felt fine, though a bit rattled after the experience. I say it was a really dumb thing to do, because after teaching this process for a number of years I should have known better than to use a tray that I didn't know what it's content was absolutely & without a doubt. This is a good illustration not only of what not to do, but of the danger you can put your home and family in if you use this stuff at home. Obviously, I strongly recommend against it. Now that my studio space is attached to my home I'm using ferric with a vertical tank and feel much safer. And, as I said before, I like the bite I get with it. But, for the winter months I still prefer to do woodblocks. There is nothing that is more comforting that working away at a block, in a warm studio, when it is raining cats and dogs outside, or better yet, it is snowing! Sharri ------------------------------ From: B Mason Date: Sun, 15 Oct 2000 14:26:17 -0700 Subject: [Baren 11735] snow and print sale Sharri, We never have snow here, well, almost never. Was that wishful thinking? Good thing you managed to remove that acid before it blew up, no wonder we are all going to non-toxic and block prints. Whew, what a scary story. We had our meeitng of the NW Print Council, of which Sharri is president, yesterday, as usual she did a great job. We got some nice exchange prints, made 10 and got 8 back so had two portfolios to sell. As usual we are out of money, sounds like a non-profit, no money. Any printmakers in WA, OR, ID, MT, HI, AK, BC or Alberta are welcome to jury for artist membership in Ferbruary, we need more artists. We have national and international venues and rotate the artists in shows. Anyone geographically challenged by not living in the NW is invited to join as an associate member. $50 gets you the newsletter and a free print, worth much more than the price of joining. Also gives you 10% discount on any purchases for a year. We will be having out annual open house and print sale Nov 11 and 12, please come and see us at: NW Print Council 922 SW Main Portland, OR 97205 In the north wing of the Portland Art Museum. Sorry for the plug, but this is print related and a very good cause! Guess I'll continue to go to the community center that has an acid room and press.... though they tend to take few precautions.... there are only two of us who use safety goggles and rubber gloves. Has anyone else had etching accidents? A couple of times I felt like I had the flu after etching in the kitchen, but maybe it was the flu. It would have been interesting reading for me as an observer, to follow the council's deliberations about reorganization, but maybe that is too much to ask. I went to a workshop at Bay Area Lawyers For The Arts to find out about non-profit orgs regulations, because I was on the CSP board and I wanted to find out more about what my obligations to the organization were. You may not need a lawyer to set up the organization. I am not a lawyer and I don't know enough about it to advise. We had been practicing the just-in-time method of cash flow to the CSP journal, which was very unsatisfactory in my view. It was supposed to be a organization of volunteers, which it was, for the most part. If you surf on over to Washington Area Lawyers For the Arts, http://www.atmar.com/wala/ you can probably find someone who will help you. We started out in my house with very little money but the agency is still in existence with a $10M annual budget, and still doing basically the same work, so I guess I did something right. When we first started one of our board members was an attorney so he did the incorporation papers. Where are you all in the process? I'm not sure about being a 'bus driver' but have knowledge and some time I'd be happy to give (that's if I don't break myself again). Saw so many people I knew, it really is a small printmaking world. I am hopeful I will find a venue for a baren show during this time. The coordinator of the symposium will look for a space for us. We will show as many prints as there is room for. The were quite interested as it is an internet exchange, seems they are looking for internet stuff to show, so we may get a gallery space here somewhere for a show. I will keep pushing them. It would be great to have a case to show brushes, blocks etc. in for educational purposes like the Skokie show. The whole idea of the symposium is that art is universal communication, especially printmaking done in multiples. They hope to involve the city from the top down. There will be a vendor fair, but no workshops or demos, just the symposiums and speakers. A slant on the philosophy of art more than the technique. No two things will run at the same time, so we will be able to see everything. At least 25 galleries in the city will showcase prints as well as all the Universities. It should be quite a wonderful international get together, so if you want to put this on your calander, please do so. I will post more info as it becomes available.
