Two of my woodcuts ("Vilja" from the Sacred Tree Exchange and "Jason Szelesky and the Eli Yoders" from Exchange #5 Ju nin to iro) won (as a pair) first prize in the Burton Annual Art Show, now in it's 18th year. The judge was George Kozmon, instructor from the Cleveland Institute of Art. Among all the wonderful paintings and photography and sculpture, woodcuts won!!! I string them across the narrowest place in my studio with Picture wire. I drill holes in clothespins and string them thru the wire. I cut small pieces of paper like the paper fingers that you use in etching and always slip the print into the folded paper before I hang it up on the clothes pin. Right now I have over 50 prints drying this way. They are up high enough, unless you are over six feet tall. I have been doing this for years, it works fine for me and I would hate to think of spreading them out to dry. Geez, it would take up ALL the space. Of course you can buy drying racks for prints, but why bother , Clothes pins are cheaper (wooden ones) I use large eye screw s to hold the wire. Put it as high as possible and get yourself a sturdy ladder. I enjoyed NY and I found a lot of things that surprised me, one of them was NY was not as dangerous as I thought. Most Japanese people think that NY is very very dangerous, and every travel guide book says too. April showed me around Chelsea gallery area. We looked at many exhibitions, my favorite show was Brigit Riley. She said my English was excellent but the truth was not I think. I'm not a good English speaker, so I thought in my mind " I'm sorry for my bad English April-san..." But I could spend good day with her. Thank you very very much April !! I will come to NY again someday, at that time I hope to see you again. It is so enlightening to see a woodcut win a prize, much less even in a show. I judge art shows quite a bit, and very rarely do I even see a woodblock print. Monotypes seem to be the only type of printmaking in the shows I have seen. Glad to see that you are educating the people where you live. Again, congrats!!!!!!! Jeanne N ------------------------------ From: B Mason Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 09:26:44 -0700 Subject: [Baren 11637] drying prints congratulations Gayle! good Job! I dry my prints in blotters, wet or dry paper. I pile them on top of flat files so they are out of the way. Blotter, prints, newsprint (too keep the blotters clean)blotter and so on. The trick to having flat prints when using wet paper is to change the blotters after about 20 minutes. If you miss this step, you will have wrinkled paper. If you are concerned about them being really flat ( I think they are flat enough for me, before this step) You can lay a piece of plywood over the top of the blotters and weight it down. Be sure to use dry blotters for this, you don't want to do this with damp blotters. Graham uses heavy cardboard for this instead of blotters, both will work. I use this same method for oil or water based inks. Hope this helps, I can not have stuff hanging all over, it would drive me more crazy than I already am, plus it would be full of spiders, etc. as my studio is not attached to the house and they love to come inside and visit me and jump into the water bath, there by committing suicide by water. HA. Barbara ------------------------------ From: "Rich" Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 09:45:38 -0700 Subject: [Baren 11638] Kate, as for print drying I have racks that look like ladders with wire = steps that are suspended from the ceiling in my studio. I hang the = prints on clothespins. It takes no floor or wall space and I can have a = hundred prints drying safely at any time. I own a copy of each of those lovely prints through the exchanges! Congratulations Gayle. I am busy working on my comedy print and in communication with Ray (from Vermont) Hudson - doing it in the Chinese manner - using water color and moist paper. I really like it. I'll be writing it up for the next Baren-Suji . Who knows, you may want to try it. He is one that grew quite a bit as he traveled through the mails. I see a lot of the smaller dragons are still there (so they apparently weren't gobbled up)- but I didn't see Horacio's Dragon Lady or Jack's "Dragon Kite". Perhaps they are just off on a little jaunt somewhere. I hope your children are still safe!" No, Fluffy and the others are doing just fine, but we had a little behavior problem and I had to send them away for a while!!!! They would not there byte the hand that feeds them (little children). Dragon page: http://www.skokienet.org/bandits/jcrstuff/dragons.html * The applets take long to load because each image has to be downloaded to the users PC, thus as I added more dragons to the page I started reducing the size of the earlier ones, after a while, even doing that, some people were unable to run the applets successfully, so the last bunch of dragon prints I got never made it to the web page. I will try reducing some of the larger print images again and adding Fluffy and the rest. Right now only 21 of the dragon prints are up. ------------------------------ From: Salsbury Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 12:37:58 -0700 Subject: [Baren 11642] 2001 Snakes Is there a support group for first time exchange participants, especially mono printers? Now how am I going to > get all that squeezed into 4x6? :-0 ooooooohhhh noooooo! What am I doing? Why, of course there is a support group! It's called Baren-after-5, the "other" list. We call it a Bar and sometimes we even take off our red dresses, but you just have to sign up to get all the Ryrie humor, the virtual Cappuccino Martinis, the Mundie travel diaries, the occasional soul-trains and everything else that goes on in that wild place. What's even better, we have not had an official bartender for a long time, so you pretty much can help yourself to all the virtual booze and goodies. Josephine has tried to turn it into a health club without much success, but if you want to bring your stationary bike, that's okay. Oh, and large images look great small, sometimes I take a digital picture of something I'm working on and shrink it in the computer. It is the equivalent of stepping waaaaay back from your work to check out composition and lights and darks and such trivialities. Works like a charm! As to your question: "What am I doing?" You are being sucked into the netherworld of exchanging prints, an addiction that will forever take precedence over anything else. There is no cure, some of us forgo showering and sleep so that we can sign up. In this last exchange, I had to train my dog to submit my name because I was off to a health fair early that morning. Heck, I would have hired a temporary employee to get me in the exchange. Incidentally, Dave takes no bribes and you cannot hack into his website to get into an exchange early (not that I ever tried either one of those strategies...) Welcome! You have some real fans there. They also have mighty fine paper. Now I will virtually tiptoe to Australia and Skokie to visit the sleeping dragons. Sssshhhhhhh. Be verwee, verwee quiet. Sue........here's an idea, make one giant monster sized snake ala 44" X 30", take a photo of the final product, cut it up into approx...49 (4 X 6) "baby" snakes and mail everyone a little piece. Since snakes and their cousins the lizards have the genetic ability to regrow limbs & other body parts....in no time at all everyone in the exchange will have their very own giant snake to play with...... think of the savings in shipping costs ! Make sure you mail everyone a copy of the photo, instructions and plenty of snake food ! So exciting to go to the post box and pick up all this international mail, and then opening it to find such a wealth of beautiful prints. So much so that I had already decided to run a card exchange through Print Australia later on this year. Dan, as usual has anticipated my plans - now I'm wondering what other thoughts of mine he picks up telepathically? Mmmmmm? Anyway, I wasnt going to do the year of snake so it looks like we are in for two differently themed card exchanges, one through Baren, one through Print Australia and I believe Brad has one going currently through the Printmakers list. I'm fast coming to the conclusion that its lucky there are so many choices to keep up with the demand. Someone asked me where exactly the dragon cards were on my site, its at http://www.acay.com.au/~severn/Dcards.htm I'll be setting up the Print Australia one in the next couple of weeks and will let you know when the time comes. The Exchanges were set on a 3-month apart schedule. This helped the people that don't check their mail often or that missed the announcements. In any case, information is always in http://www.woodblock.com/forum/exchange/index.html Exchange #9 sign up begins New Year AM, January 1st, 2001; first exchange of the 'new millennium (hey there's an overused totally thoroughly absolutely much overrated theme! Or maybe "1,000 years ago..."). There was an update from Dave about a week before the exchange sign up deadline. Wanda and Barbara fessed up they forgot about the sign up until later that morning. Sometimes we all just get busy! And as Dan and Jim like to remind us once in a while, there is always the Swap Shop! http://www.woodblock.com/forum/swapshop/index.html (we really need more people in the Swap Shop cuz I'm still waiting on my first set of prints...tap...tap...tap...) Also remember that Pete just posted a page for the Sssssssssssnake Exchange: http://www.geocities.com/pedrobot2000/snake.html Still more opportunities for exchanging through PrintAustralia and Printmakers.
