Baren Digest Tuesday, 12 September 2000 Volume 12 : Number 1142 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: slinder@mediaone.net Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 08:51:09 -0500 Subject: [Baren 11257] Aiko's Papers and Fellowship Today I'm sending information about Columbia College's classes and workshops in Chicago. Some are single day events, so perhaps some of you might spend a weekend "playing" in Chicago taking a class. You'll also see a photo of Chicago's fabled Aiko, matriarch of Japanese hand made papers in her little kingdom, Aiko's, in Chicago! She sponsors a fellowship in Book and Paper at Columbia. The site also has links to other book and paper sites. Have a good week! Now all we have to do is make room for about 100 more members. At this rate I will never meet you all. But I relish those few that I have made my friends, even the virtual ones!!!! Good job! When I was in the computer business, we always told our clients "If you have more money than brains, buy a MAC" PCs have always had much more bang for the buck, and a long history of open architecture. So don't confuse us with the Beta vs. VHS analogy... Have to admit, though, those new cases look very edible! Hi Julio, I do use a real shoe brush with water based ink: createx, , watercolor, or Speedball waterbased ink. Ther's no buildup with what I do. Wash it with regular detergent or Mr. Clean. Apple has set the trend for 18 years. All others have copied. ie icons.... desktop.... folders. Apple is the computer of Graphics. ie. 95% of the design houses and Newspapers around the world use them. Have a good day .... and if you use the other thingie .... have a better day. Dave answered this recently and in the past he told us about the very large number of brushes he has. He stated then that he never mixed colour brushes with other colours .... meaning he has a red brush, a blue brush, yellow brush and the list goes on and on and on. I don't recommend this to most people as; 1. It is not necessary and 2. It is not necessary. Matter of fact I wouldn't recommend it to anybody that unless they did thousands of prints. You truly can get by with 4 or 5 brushes of two different sizes. You need to have at least two if you are going to do bokashi.... one to ink and one to unink....if you will. Carol wrote..... >I do use a real shoe brush with water based ink: That is interesting.... I have often wondered if they would work. I bet you get some interesting texture and effects. Certainly smooth would not be there. >Wash it with regular detergent or Mr. Clean. I want to just make a point about using soap when you clean brushes. Make sure you really rinse that soap out. I believe it could deteriorate the hair if any residue is left in the brush. On the drying..... It is very important to get out as much moisture as possible. It is physically impossible to not to get water on the wood and this is where the moisture can or could swell the wood then dry and leave the hairs dangling cause hair loss......Hummmm I wonder if that the problem with my head. I hold the brush firmly in my fingers and on an absorbent cloth I pound the heel of my hand hard on the cloth - not allowing the bristle to be smashed or hit hard on the cloth. This cause most of the wetness to be shaken out of the brush. (Boy that is hard to discribe.) I know that when I have done this 1/2 dozen times I can not feel excess moisture in the brush, and my hand hurts like heck. There is another way..... and isn't there always. Go to the store and by a Thingie..... Marnie uses it to spin the water out of lettuce. If you position the brushes, always equal numbers to distribute the weight, and spin the Thingie as fast as you can...... Voila nice dry brushes. If you notice that the moisture you spin out is dirty (coloured) you have not cleaned the brushes good enough. Awsome.
