I have numerous prints that have sold one or two, and dozens that have sold 6 to 8 and there they sit. What to do? There is nothing wrong with them and they are the ones that are what I define as a risk and worthy of the effort. That is in creating the image, breaking the mould and do something that is different. In time, and mine is shorter than those starting or part way in this art business, I know as sure as arthritis in the joints they will be my pension fund. >Still, if you are serious about it, it's the way to >go, especially with hanga, where good paper makes such a big difference in >printing. I should get some of the good stuff when you order! I will let you know. I have the phone number and am looking looking for a person to speak the language. Any suggestions would be appreciated as long as they do not involve anatomy, explosions or high rise apartments. thanks, Eli Griggs Charlotte N.C. A most interesting email came in this morning, from some people who are importing wood products from Russia: > ... and have noticed that some artists are very happy with > birch plywood blocks, while others have had trouble with > holes and 'apple-core'. Our plywood is 100% birch, and does > not have these negative characteristics. The face has no > knots, providing a smooth, consistent surface. Both sides > can be used ... doubling the cost-effectiveness. Their web page is at: http://www.forestmachines.com/plywood.html ... and I would very much suggest that those of you using plywood or basswood go and check it out. The prices are very competitive indeed. Here is another quote from their material: > We pride ourselves on being an environmentally conscious company. > We refuse to clear-cut. FMWP practices only select harvesting, > thus preserving the natural diversity and integrity of the > Siberian forest. The people involved - Mark Baldwin and Yuri Pantioukhin - are 'listening in' here on [Baren], so after looking at their website, if you have any questions about their products, you can ask them right here ... Dear Mark and Yuri of FMWP, I was very interested in your woodblocks but I work larger(at least 14" x 11). do you offer larger blocks. Greg ------------------------------ From: yuri Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2000 06:14:27 -0700 Subject: [Baren 11123] Re: Source for birch blocks ... Dear Greg, We started with smaller blocks, but we will get some larger stuff in the future. It's a very tough and competitive business. The shipping cost on larger blocks will be too high for the small quantities, so we decided to market this first. You probably can help us on this matter. What quantities of large blocks would you buy every month or year, and what price would you pay without thinking too much about it. I've tried the gluing paper down thingie too for design transfer to the blocks, I still keep coming back to the old tracing paper & carbon paper method, it's not so messy and seems to work well - got to get to work now- Sarah ------------------------------ From: Graham Scholes Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2000 20:29:24 -0700 Subject: [Baren 11125] Re: Source for birch blocks ... I belong to another list server and the act of doing business is not encouraged. I would recommend that we do not have this venue become commercial. The announcement by Dave is good but individual transactions should be posted privately. What do the bareners think? Mark and Yuri (the suppliers of these plywood blocks) have been 'lurking' on [Baren] for a while, quietly learning about woodblock printmakers' needs and requirements. During that period they complied with our general rule about not using the list for commercial purposes, and said not one word about their products. This morning, when I introduced them, I _specifically_ made it clear that it was OK for them to reply to members' questions about their products - in the hope that this topic can develop into a dialogue between a group of printmakers and a manufacturer who is trying to develop products of use to that group. In case anybody is confused by this, let me clarify the point - direct announcements of products or services for sale are not welcome. Discussion about such products is.
