All over the world people are talking about the great works of Julio Rodriquez and his team in putting on the Skokie Library, Skokie, Ill., Baren Woodblock Printers' Exhibit! And now in the National Gallery of Uganda, thanks to Greg Robinson! God bless. A possible solution could be to form a sponsor group within Baren itself. But I agree with Gerald Soworka that goals should carefully be defined, and I agree with Jean Eger that in relation to expositions the question of ÒguidelinesÓ needs to be addressed. I believe the same importance as to the financial situation should be attributed to the development of the encyclopedia. I think somehow the information collected so far needs to be integrated and presented in a comprehensive way. The formation of topic-related working groups would allow this to be done. This also would allow students to make welcome and valuable contributions. This my 2 cents and 2 Rappen contribution Rudolf Stalder ------------------------------ From: amoss@mindspring.com (John Amoss) Date: Wed, 3 May 2000 13:27:15 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [Baren 9590] archive updates Wanda wrote: >Anyone missing messages? At the risk of appearing demanding, when can we expect the 'download' archive versions? I really have been able to find a lot of info by searching using the shareware BBEdit Lite 4.6 program. It can be ordered from a company called GPN, phone number 1/800-228-4630, fax number 1/800-306-2330, email - gpn@unlinfo.unl.edu Their address is: 1800 North 33rd Street P.O. Box 80669 Lincoln, NE 68501-0669 The title in question is: "Is It Art?" Because I teach at a large university, (aka the "grey mother") I was able to purchase it for my students to view at a "library rate" of $29.95. I was a bit disappointed as Karen's segment on it only lasted about seven minutes of the hour long total, but there were some other very interesting artists featured as well. Does anyone know where I can get my hands on a video of Antonio Frasconi's work which aired on the New York PBS station about twelve years or so ago. It was produced by his son Pablo, and is quite wonderful, but I can't for the life of me recall the name of it. It would be incredibly inspirational for my woodcut class to see. I've done searches on the net, could call Antonio, but hate to bother him. Julio, I too have been getting spammed by the same evil concerns. Due to my last name, I've also unfortunately gotten HUGE amounts of spam asking me if I want to see fourteen years old girls in the NUDE NUDE NUDE and other such fascinating quandaries. I've also noted that when doing a search of one's own name, oftentimes postings made to Baren come up. Dave, have you noticed this? It makes one want to be very, very careful in posting, which is perhaps for the best. I will be checking into it soon. It was produced Nebraska Public television. I will find out more about this as soon as my classes are over it is finals week here. When checked it was the "book section" and when the return button was clicked I was taken to the encyclopedia and the rest of the linkage is obvious. Another reference was for a friend's art group in the U.S. on which I'd left a "visitor" message last year when they opened the site. My sister uses Hotmail... which has installed a filter that stores all mail NOT using the user's actual, correct, name on a separate area that gets automatically deleted after a month. Sounds like a good idea! Like Julio and others I guess we have to put up with this but it does make me wary of (a) using my own name and (b) of posting at all. Whenever I browse through the woodblock.com logbooks (the record of all accesses to the [Baren] website) I see many accesses to the archives from Yahoo or Alta Vista links ... In the past, when I myself was doing the archiving, I was pretty free with trashing irrelevant personal postings, but I see that Wanda has decided to take a different tack - she wants more of the 'flavour' of the group to be preserved in the Archives, so is doing her pruning less vigorously than I did. So yes indeed, remember Miranda. "Anything you say may be used against you in a court of law ...." But hey, nobody is posting _that_ kind of stuff anyway, right? A lovely woman in Alabama with the same name & several other similarities....so how do you dig deep enough into the 'net to find individual postings in archives of mailing lists? And why? Roxanne, I get those "come look at me - I'm blonde & beautiful & etc." e-mails too. I just figured they get your address from the "cookies" placed into your system whenever you look at a web page. And I look at lots & lots of web pages! I just delete, delete, delete & eventually they stop coming to me. Although, I now have my computer set to warn me about cookies & I only accept them at web sites that I use frequently - like Amazon.com etc. If anyone finds the Karen Kunc video (not the 6 minute one) let us know where & how one can obtain it. Same with the Antonio Frasconi one. Wanda ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V11 #997 ****************************
