Julio, what can we say other than thank you for bringing Baren to Skokie. You have won all our admiration for the job you have done with this. The photos take us there and we appreciate it. Josephine, I like what you have said about black and white printmaking. There are dynamics in a black and white design you can't achieve in any other way. Color is beautiful, but black and white equals the bones of design. We all need to appreciate how difficult it is to achieve a good balance with black and white and to express those shades of gray using only black and white. Pete, your print's essence of wood is its most exciting feature! Well done. Art starts with black and white in learning to draw and proceeds from there. It is dramatic and just look at how wonderful black and white photography is , compared to colored. Well, thats my opinion. I also love color but still marvel at a good black and white, print, drawing, photo, etc. Congrats, JULIO, what a great job, enjoyed the pics. I am now the editor of the Maryland Printmakers' newsletter, so I look at all similar things very closely. I'm impressed. Thanks! I'm thinking that I should have an article about Baren in the Maryland Printmakers newsletter - maybe I could "e-interview" some of you? Shireen, please do e-interview "Bareners!" This is an awesome and varied group. And congratulations on your editing job; you will find many hours of work and many many rewards. Tons of great stuff as of late- I have question not concerning tech stuff. Have been having debate with others about content and form, etc . . . . . Does anyone feel social or moral obligation is the driving force behind their work?? Do you do the work for ME ( I ) only?? I saw some discussion at one point that talked of letting go of the brain and letting the work flow. I there any responsibility for making the work though?? I don't know, just asking- I am pretty new so this may have been discussed before but someone could humor me, yes? I promise to state my view but would love to hear some input as new editions are underway and some wonderful print exhibits are being seen around the US right now. peter walls baton rouge ------------------------------ From: Arafat Alnaim Date: Wed, 5 Apr 2000 22:29:47 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Baren 9165] Re: New Print, Helio relief and Sand plasting Dear pete, Thank you for cooperation. This site will show you some varieties of sandblasting chambers and portable blasting equipment. I'm eager to try this myself! We have a sandblasting chamber at the college where I print. (There are on line warnings about silicosis and other health warnings when using sandblasters that aren't enclosed.) Number one, thanks to Maria for gently but effectively cajoling, encouraging and exhorting the X5 participants into getting their work in to her on time. I should get the first batch of prints from Maria at the end of next week, in plenty of time for framing. Of course, I know it was just self-interest that got us all to yield to her blandishments, because if we didn't, it could have got very ugly (I think 'arango' is Spanish for 'one who harangues'...thank God we didn't have to find out if that's what it *really* means...:-)). 2. As it turns out, more than half of the X5 participants were also in X4 -- the self-portrait exchange -- and when the Director of the Nat'l Gallery here found this out he was very excited and wanted to find a way to display these as well. I'm working on this, and intend to have a sort of 'side show' to the main exhibit to display the self-portraits. I mention this because there are a few X5 participants who were not in X4 but who have done self-portraits (I think I saw them on Brad's site...is that right?) and if they were so inclined and wanted to send me their work -- or if anyone else in junin toiro wants to whip off a quick autoretrato before dinner -- they would be most welcome to be included in this part of the show. 3. In this connection, and because we are going to be presenting the backgrounds of the Ugandan participants in the show, I'd love to have a short blurb from each Baren exhibitor that gives a few biographical details and perhaps some reflections on your connection with this art form. I'm not interested in a long CV with all the shows you've entered, etc., but what would be fascinating to the Ugandan viewing public and the Ugandan artists participating would be such information as how important is printmaking, and particularly relief printmaking, in your artistic activities? Are you self-taught in printmaking? Are you formally or academically trained in other art forms? What's your day-time job? And any other reflections resembling a sort of 'artist's statement' or philosophy if you like. The whole blurb can be as short as this paragraph you are now reading. All the other information I need, such as who you are and where you live, I can get from other sources (esp. the colophon data you submitted to Dave last month about the print itself -- however, if you did not do a colophon, or if in it you did not discuss the explicit connection between what you rendered and the junin toiro theme, can I ask you to send this to me, too?) 4. It looks like we'll have at least fifteen Ugandan artists producing for the show (although I have not yet seen their work, so some may not be exhibited). If most of them come through, this will make a very well-balanced exhibition. Baren is, however, clearly the main draw and the heart of the show. There is a real interest in Baren among many of the local artists, and one of the 'residuals' of this show, I hope, will be inclusion of one or more indigenous Ugandan artists as members of our group. There is some really distinctive work being done here, but in isolation and with hardly any resources (I have given blocks, paper, ink and lent tools to some participants). 5. Thanks to all who have sent me checks (or have sent checks to Maria to on-send to me). I have tried to acknowledge receipt individually, but in a few cases (Lynita, Bobbie...) I did not have your e-mail addresses. Nevetheless, I would like to assure all who have kindly helped support this show financially that I am making your dollars go far...getting free stuff wherever I can, beating down prices, etc. The full story will be told in a narrative in Baren-Suji. (Keep your subscription current!) 6. I don't think I will need to make any more broadcast announcements on the Kampala show; I will most likely contact some of you individually and off-List as I proceed. The next bit of data of interest to the whole membership will be the URL of the show itself...stay tuned!
