[Baren} the mailing list / discussion forum for woodblock printmaking Baren Digest Saturday, 24 June 2000 Volume 11 : Number 1054 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: James G Mundie Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2000 12:11:55 -0400 Subject: [Baren 10165] SwapShop I have very good news for some of you. After much prodding and pulling, SwapShop is finally off the ground! After all these many months, I have received enough prints to actually send some back. I'm sure that some of your palms are sweaty with anticipation (or is that just North American summer?); however, I am afraid I will have to ask those lucky folks who will be receiving prints to be patient for just a tad bit longer. I am up to my neck and then some trying to finish new work for a solo show that opens in a few short weeks. I have to choose my priorities, so you know what will have to wait... I promise you will have your prints very soon, but in the meantime... Send some more prints so we can keep this momentum going! I could organize monthly changing expositions on my webpage presenting about 10 images at the time. This could give many Bareners occasion to present their work and others a chance to see it. I dispose of a HP ScanJet 5100C which handles photos pretty well. I just would need photos of good quality of the artwork. Bareners interested to participate in some pilot-runs may contact me directly. A project of this type would also allow to establish a Baren-art- collection on CD, something probably worth to discuss in more depth. to Matt : " ..... a bit of a similar work effort back on this side of the continent, a workshop at the Horizons center in MA. Images from the three-day event are posted at: http://www.ooloopress.com/studio/Studio.html " Beautiful prints and work. Obviously you are a very good teacher. The presentation relates in some way also to the ideas stressed by Dwight and Philip. to Graham : Not new ! Interesting to see somebody else working just like us. Likely that we soon will see people cleaning their full-of-paint fingers in each others hair and at the end of the day we get perhaps even a picture of Graham - completely exhausted from printing -using a real press. But again great ideas are rarely new as recently discussed by several high-rated philosophically inspired Bareners. I'm new to this list, but have been screen printing for 27 years. I plan to try wood block again as it appeals to my desire for woodworking and printmaking. On the subject of coating a block for clean up, the best thing I have found is "sanding sealer". It has no color and dries fast in about 5 to 15 minutes. It is very durable without "adding" texture to the wood. It soaks into the wood and leaves almost no trace behind. If you use a light oil as mentioned, the cleanup should be almost as new. Sanding sealer is available at most woodworking supply houses. While waiting for updates from the bootcampers up in Sydney.......I have finally got around to putting up "some" prints on my website. If you like woodblock landscapes....there's quite a nice grouping. The gallery is still under construction and the thumbnails have not been reduced as of yet (may download slow). All images are from scans of actual woodblock prints. There's much more upgrades coming but for an idea of what I have in mind click on the images that have the green border to see blow ups. http://www.skokienet.org/bandits/jcrstuff/jrprntin.html Thanks...Julio HomePage: http://www.skokienet.org/bandits/micasa.html ------------------------------ From: "Maria Arango" Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2000 15:50:47 -0700 Subject: [Baren 10169] left out? huuuuh? Great ideas about the exchanges everyone! Please remember when suggesting parallel exchanges and that sort of thing that Baren needs help to keep up with it all. Look at what some Bareners have started below. Here are some handy URLs and resources to participate in as many exchanges as your printmaker's heart may desire: Keep an eye on Baren exchanges here: http://woodblock.com/forum/exchange/index.html All the info for all the current, past and future exchanges is reachable from that page. Bookmark the sign-up page and this way, when the time comes you will be ready! Some of the exchange junkies, won't mention any names here, have been known to synchronize their computer clocks with GMT and other maniacal stratagems that will not be mentioned here. Let's just say that, yes, competition for sign ups is fierce. We Bareners are animals, thank you, awrooooooooooo! For the calm, cool and collect types: http://woodblock.com/forum/swapshop/index.html Enter the Swap Shop, no hair raising deadlines, no fuss, no muss. Just cut and print at your leisure and send in your prints when you are ready. This is no less an exchange than the above, swap-shop prints are just as likely to be included in exhibits and also end up in the prestigious Gilke Center in Oregon. The Swap Shop was specifically designed so that everyone can participate and you can send prints in two different sizes. Why are there no more sign ups? Dunno... For those reaching far and wide to other corners of the world: http://www.acay.com.au >From that page you can get to other exchanges planned by our very own Bareneer Josephine Severn down under (under what, we don't know). So far, she has planned three including an exhibition and there is sure more to come. There is even a PrintAustralia list to follow it all. Yet another valiant Bareneer who belongs to the movers and the shakers group: http://www.baschwar.com/printmakers/ Brad Schwartz has so far organized and coordinated two exchanges (themes were self-portraits and moola) and I'm sure more are planned for the future. These are usually larger format so it allows those of us who think large to work out our frustrations. Like Josephine, Brad also started a list to keep track of us. If you still have time after all that, the Wood Engraver's Network has quarterly exchanges and wood engraving will keep you quiet and still for long stretches at a time (that's why when I get cranky about something my husband just hands me a burin). Try it! These are a wonderful group of people to deal with and the Bundles (read: Exchanges) are precious to behold. Their URL: http://members.aol.com/WENET/wen.html Still want more? Probably there will undoubtedly be another Year of the Whathaveyou postcard exchange (there were two simultaneous going on last year). I don't know what a Whathaveyou looks like, I better go research that one. And, as Josephine and Brad and Julio and Gregory have done, everyone is certainly free to start exchanges, organize exhibits, get Bareners on their websites and generally use Baren as the launching pad for reaching participants, promoting printmaking through exhibits, and exchanging to your heart's delight. The more the merrier!
