Last year I had that experience with a Hi Carol, I haven't had any experience with this gallery (or person?) - where is she located? scarier still, I don't see a listing for her in the phone book. also, do you take a magazine called ArtCalendar? It's a very good publication w/lots of listings & info, and they have a column called "scuttlebutt" where people write in about any weird or bad experiences they've had w/galleries, etc. You might contact them & see if they've heard anything about this - you can write the managing editor at barb@artcalendar.com. good luck Sarah ------------------------------ From: Julio.Rodriguez@walgreens.com Date: Wed, 21 Jun 2000 10:20:08 -0500 Subject: [Baren 10140] Re: show in Chicago Hi Sarah, I will try to make it down to the opening of the Chicago show Friday night. If not, for sure I will get down there during the weekend and take some pics for you. Congrats and keep up the good work!!! Julio ------------------------------ From: "Daniel L. Dousing with solvent washes ink into the cuts & makes it very hard to see where to continue cutting. Maybe the ink is just left on to dry? I dunno. Any advice would be appreciated. Darrell Madis ------------------------------ From: "Maria Arango" Date: Wed, 21 Jun 2000 20:32:06 -0700 Subject: [Baren 10143] Re: cleaning blocks Darrell, I usually go about it two ways, depending on what I will do with the block. If it's a (gasp!) limited edition and I am finished, I just let the ink dry right on the block and it seals it and keeps it forever very nicely. If I will print from it again, such as in a (double gasp!) non-editioned print or a reduction print, I run the block through the press (formerly the baren) with newsprint on top until I can no longer print an image, not even a ghost, boo. All the ink is gone, lines are clean, life is beautiful. If you don't have the patience or the arm for that process, take a wee-bit of baby oil on a paper towel wadded up, and gently, very gently, rub the surface of the block to take up the ink. Once you have a nice oily layer, wipe gently again with more clean paper towels. You should be able to wipe most of the ink with minimal smearing. YO! GREGORY!!! Did 'we' forget the Kampala report for Baren-Suji? I don't want to be sued for false advertising...should I make something up along the maggot-eating-jungle lines? I didn't think so. I use a press and run my block through with newsprint two or three times to remove as much excess ink as possible. This is usually enough. AS for hand printing I am not too sure. Maybe dampening some paper(scap) with thinner (lightly) you can hand print the excess off. hope this helps pete B.R. ------------------------------ From: Pgiclas@aol.com Date: Wed, 21 Jun 2000 23:53:36 EDT Subject: [Baren 10145] Re: cleaning blocks Try using vegetable oil. Rub it on really well, and then scrub the block with soapy water. It works like a charm and it's non-toxic!!! I shellac my blocks lightly before inking, and that keeps the water from making them soggy. I've been printing by hand, will have to set up the press for blocks, save elbow grease. I was going to shellac the present block but my shellac is quite old and when it gets too old it never dries properly and stay sticky. But that reminds me, Sherwin-Williams carries white pigmented shellac. I found it very useful as a very visible stop out varnish in etching. Might be nice used also to coat dark colored wood blocks to make the cutting more visible. The woman who emailed me, Debra, was very apologetic, and said that things had been delayed since her father just passed away. Just thought those who entered the competition may want to know about this and you should all be receiving word one way or the other shortly. Best wishes Sarah Cucamongie@aol.com ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V11 #1052 *****************************
