Here is another wonderful site for Aboriginal Prints (http://www.aboriginalartprints.com.au/default.cfm) Which I recommend for every one who is interested on this side of things. Enjoy the theoretical article about this art. You can use the exchange calculator there anytime, or bookmark the site that provides this service, or sign up for their currency calculator for free and stick it in your website. Just another free service provided to you by the printmaking studio ;-) Barbara, can I have your autograph before fame goes to your head? double ;-) On the printmaking end of things, could someone elaborate on the practice of inserting a block of wood for detail work, such as boxwood into cherry? I have read some about it but any tips and tricks would be helpful. Palenville, a stone's throw from Woodstock, was the most ramshackle of the bunch, but the one I absolutely loved the best. It was the least private - some of us stayed in a converted barn, we took all our meals together, and my studio was what had at one time been the dining room of a convent. I think just knowing that there was someone across the hall from me making art, and located above me doing the same, helped me to generate some great work myself. It was also an interesting mixture of writers, actors, dancers and visual artists. I think that sort of cross dialogue helped to generate lots of creative work. Also, we printmakers on the whole are a fairly communal lot and Palenville embraced that particular ethic. While I had a brand new, beautiful huge studio/living space at Dorland, the isolation made me prone to fits of depression. Thankfully, Ralph, the resident elkhound adopted me during the latter part of my stay. I had no vehicle at both of the above, but one could walk into town from Palenville, so the feeling of being "trapped" was never much of a concern. Dorland is quite interesting, as there are no creature comforts - such as electric lights. It is also fairly monastic in nature - contact with other residents is done via notes in the mailroom. You really learned to tune into the rhythms of the day and work accordingly - very Walden Pond, but with rattlesnakes and mountain lions. Still on my list - the Frans Masreel (sp?) Center in Belgium, the Millais Colony in NY, and (of course) the McDowell Colony in NH. How does the Vermont Studio Center seem to you? I had a friend who was there some time back, but she was less than impressed by the quality of the work around her and the commitment of the residents. Ruth I see where you are going to be doing the Hanga workshop for the LAPS. Hope you get lots of great students! To those of you going to Frogman's, be on the lookout for three of my peripatetic students - Sarah Whorf-Sherfield, Kristi Genoway, and Pete Rangel. Sorry not to recall what classes they are in. I got one of my prints into the Student Art Show at school this year (the one I did for the Aussie Tree Exchange), which is pretty cool. Even cooler is that I won the 2000 Joe Moran (my printmaking prof) Printmaking Award. It is the first award I've ever received for my art, and I am really excited. Plus, it comes with $100.00, which certainly helps my shoestring budget. - --Pete ------------------------------ From: Walter Mahoski Date: Thu, 08 Jun 2000 23:39:28 -0400 Subject: [Baren 9988] Leonard Baskin I don't know how I missed this last week, but Leonard Baskin has passed away. Here is a link to an article about his passing. This man was my hero. Tonight, I am VERY bummed. 3 weeks ago, I sent him a portfolio of relief prints produced by my fifth grade students, based on his work. I was curious as to why there was such a surge in his work available on ebay this week. Now I know.
