The modern print scene here works exactly the same as it does everywhere else. All the modern artists use edition numbers to try to make their work 'exclusive'. Running side-by-side that though, is still a remnant of the old tradition of prints as simple printed objects. The Yoshidas (Hiroshi/Toshi/Tsukasa) for example, do not (generally) number their prints, and are still reprinting old blocks for sale in galleries around the world. The 'shin-hanga' people (Hasui, etc.) tried to have their cake and eat it too. Much of their work was in 'open' editions, but pressure from overseas buyers (Muller, etc.) led them (or more correctly, led their publishers) to artificially limit some editions. ** I myself encounter very little resistance to my way of doing things (no numbers, subscription only). Each time I have an exhibition, of course there are people who leave without purchasing prints, and perhaps these people have been put off by my system, but there are plenty of others who _do_ leave order forms ... Would it be possible to do 'subscriptions' in places other than Japan? As you can tell from browsing the 'thank you' list of my subscribers to last year's album - in the 'Afterword' linked to this page: http://woodblock.com/surimono/1999/1999album.html ... non-Japanese made up 28% of my subscriber's list last year, and this year the proportion is even higher. (This is the Surimono Album list; the subscriber's list for the poetry series has a far smaller proportion of foreigners.) ** I'm sure that if you asked some of my subscribers which they would prefer: - - my current system with no edition numbers (thus no exclusivity) but reasonable prices - - limited editions (in smaller quantities) and correspondingly higher prices ... the answers you get would be fairly predictable ... Hey Maria, The main culprit is often the paper - go for something v. smooth for those fine lines? Also - do not overink the block as the lines will fill up quickly. Hope it prints well.
