[Baren} the mailing list / discussion forum for woodblock printmaking Baren Digest Wednesday, 24 May 2000 Volume 11 : Number1017 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Cucamongie@aol.com Date: Tue, 23 May 2000 10:31:38 EDT Subject: [Baren 9714] Lynd ward, pigments etc Hi all, Exchange 5 is AWESOME! sorry I can't see each & every one of these prints in person, they're great!! Thanks Roger for the Lynd Ward description, he gets such subtle & wonderful effects, it's hard to believe it's wood! As for powdered pigments, I can't see why anyone would want to shorten their lifespan by using powdered pigments (which are very bad to breathe!) if they are able to purchase them already dispersed in water!! Guerra in New York City sells them this way and I'm sure they would be happy to do mail order if requested. The powder stays pretty well mixed w/the water, you just have to shake the bottle a bit. Susan Rostow's akua color is also pre-mixed and the colors are quite lovely & can be used for all types of printmaking. James, interesting to read about some of your process, even though I am a "water" person and not an oily person, fun to hear about how you get some of the wonderful effects on your amazing prints. best wishes all Sarah ------------------------------ From: Date: Tue, 23 May 2000 11:32:12 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Baren 9715] Rio Hello, Baren! Nothing like having the real thing in your hands. Make sure someone from the exchange (Wanda, Gayle) take their folio with to share with Dave, Graham and the others at bootcamp. Many of the prints interpreted the Junin Toiro theme strictly within the "10 people, 10 color" context (10 houses, 10 apples, ten people, etc..) Others gave it a twist, like Pete's .....where 10 different texttured blocks make up the central image. Great job by everyone! I chose a more liberal interpretation for my print. My interpretation is more within the context of "one man's treasure is another man's garbage"....or "look beyond the obvious". Unless you are anartist, most people are divided as to where to place 'the nude'. To some a well executed nude is Art, to others any form of nudity is unacceptable. My print "Paradise Island" offers a bit to both groups. Wether you choose to see a beautiful island, with tall-dangerous hills to climb, hidden treasures to discover and the pleasing aroma of it's tropical forest waiting to be explored.....or you see the image of a beautiful woman.....well........I guess the same still applies! Do I remember reading that you taught a Chinese method of print making and can you describe the process a bit - or point me to some illustrations. I'm curious since I read something about hand painting. Dimitris You will find many photos of the Rio Samba Parade on the LIESA web site - Liga Independente das Escolas de Samba do Rio de Janeiro- a league that congregates the 11 main Samba Societies (Escolas de Samba) in Rio. (there are hundreds of Samba Societies in Rio). www.liesa.com.br/fotos/fotos.htm This site is in Portuguese but just click in the name of the society (Beija Flor, Caprichosos, Mangueira, Salgueiro, Vila Isabel, Mocidade, Imperatriz etc.). and see the photos. I will send you privately more information about this wonderful subject "samba dancers" as soon as I get. I will include also an old photo of a baren member and his wife wearing the costumes of Mangueira to participate of the 1984 Rio Samba Parade. By the way, as Josephine noticed, my dragon print was inspired on the samba parade costumes. Philip wrote: >Dimitris,......rent a copy of the movie "Black Orpheus",...1959,....lots of what you are looking for! > Philip This French movie was directed by Marcel Camus and won the 1959 Palme D'Or Film Festival in Cannes. The film is an exotic interpretation of the theater play "Orfeu da ConceiŤ‹o" (an adaptation of Greek Orpheum to Rio scene) writed by the great poet and samba composer Vinicius de Moraes. Its soundtrack includes musics by Tom Jobim and Luis Bonfa, some of the first recordings of Bossa Nova. There is a new movie about the same (Black Orpheum) theme made by the Brazilian director Cac‡ Diegues in 1999. Taking the opportunity I suggest a rapid photo tour around Rio. www.rio.rj.gov.br/riotur Muito obrigado, Hor‡cio >From Copacabana / Rio / Brazil. http://www.analisevital.com.br/xilograv.htm horacio@centroin.com.br PS Dimitris, are you making prints about samba dancers? ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V11 #1017 *****************************
