Now Jack, about that dragon ...I think you may be sending a lot of us back to the drawing board. Seeing the accurate registration in those kite strings is really quite a humbling experience. How did you transfer your image to the blocks? The prizes are the prints we receive in exchange for sending ours. The styles differ so widely that it would seem a shame to establish a dominant aesthetic in such a diverse environment. Regional differences should be enhanced rather than discouraged. I do agree with those who think it is important and useful for the group to have good work showcased. An alternative may be recognizing notable exchange prints in BarenSuji as a feature article. This may allow the artist to explain how she or he made the piece and where they are coming from. That can in turn reward and inspire folks rather than getting everyone's britches in a wad. I'll bet Maria and Suji staff are way ahead of me on this. I just hope her 4/1 deadline isn't an April Fool's prank or there might be angry letters on the editorial page. :~) - -John A. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ AMOSS ILLUSTRATION, INC. What newsletter? :-) That's a great idea about featuring a particular print, blow-by-blow...any volunteers? The first proud issue of Baren-Suji is on the launch pad, revving up its tiny engine, ready to fly all over the world. If anyone who was thinking of contributing missed the deadline, do not despair, there will be plenty of chances. In fact, I am hoping that this first issue will provoke reaction and letters and contributions from members. The more the merrier! With Kampala and Skokie as features for the _second_ issue, it is already shaping up to be an interesting one as well. Have been very busy organizing an Open Studio. It was a great success. I took a few pics of the studio in progress and will send it to Maria for next months newsletter. An Open Studio has many rewards although lots of work, mailings, invitations, rehanging and YES, CLEANING. More later. I really do not think that giving awards would be appropriate on the Baren. It might discourage many who have doubts re; their prowess at the woodblock technique. If awards want to be given then try a Print exhibition. I agree with Graham who said that their are only 3 winnners, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and a lot of disappointed people who are trying their darndest to make a good woodblock. I have a Links page on my Web site. A few of the urls are wrong as they cannot be accessed. If you have a Web site, please check the page and let me know if it is correct. If you have a Web site and it is not on the page , let me know and I will add it. We Bareners have to stick together. Andy; Loved the description of you steaming tea prints!!! Hope you Mother is ok. This major exhibit is made possible through collaboration with [Baren], an international online forum for woodblock printmakers. Local resident Julio Rodriguez is a member of the group and will share his extensive collection of prints with the public. [Baren] is an Internet forum where woodblock printmakers can discuss, share, and instruct each other on the technical and artistic points of their craft. Started in 1997 by David Bull, a printmaker living in Japan, the forum has grown to a worldwide membership of more than 175 active participants. [Baren] also contains the Internet's largest online resource guide on woodblock printmaking. Membership is free and a daily email digest is available. The skill required to create a woodblock print makes it both an art and= a craft. The artist carves a design onto a piece of wood. The wood is covered = with ink, and a sheet of paper is laid on top of it. A tool called a baren is the= n used to rub the paper repeatedly, until the design is transferred onto paper= . It is a time-consuming and painstaking process, but as [Baren] founder David= Bull has said, ?if you like doing something, isn?t it better if it takes a long = time?? Approximately six months after [Baren] was created, a group of member= s decided to share their prints with each other. They made multiple copies of e= ach print by hand, and shipped them to other members around the world. Th= e [Baren] Exchange was born, and members of the group have continued to share = their art with each other in subsequent exchanges. The group is now focusing o= n showing their diverse collections with the general public through exhibits lik= e the one at Skokie Public Library. Recent [Baren] shows were also held in Kyot= o, Japan, and New York City. Exhibitions are planned for galleries in Uganda and = Australia later this year. The prints will be on display at Skokie Public Library from April 3 = to May 3. There will also be an exhibit of the tools used in the printmaking pro= cess, and a computer terminal where patrons can visit [Baren?s] we= bsite at www.w.com. An opening reception will be held on April 6 at 7:00= p.m. Skokie Public Library, located at 5215 Oakton Street, is open to t= he public Monday through Friday from 9:00a.m. to 9:00p.m., Saturday from 9:= 00a.m. to 6:00p.m., and Sunday from 12:00p.m. to 6:00p.m. = ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V10 #952 ****************************
