I, too, am not in favor of instituting any sort of contest among the Baren folks. Having participated in 4 of the exchanges and seen the wide variety of techniques, subjects, and levels of skill, I think we'd just have to give everyone one of the awards as each work is special and unique. And, it seems to me, the purpose (or one purpose) of Baren is to encourage and not necessarily to reward. I love the prints in the exchanges by the beginners! I marvel at the skill of some carvers, some printers, some designers! I don't think there is any cure for being disappointed when your work is rejected by a show. Baren is more "share" than "show." If I had to judge I'd probably lay all the prints out on the back lawn and wait for the first leaf of autumn to land on the winner. The list server is a special and unique forum that see NO competition. There is a wonderful generousity and willingness to share ideas. This enables each person to grow and expand there knowledge. It is hard work that is the key of growth for an artist. Awards do nothing to ad to this objective. Only three people are happy. The first, the second, and the third place, winners Everybody else ..... please exuse the expression..... is P'ed off because of the rejection. In the adjudication of Arts there is very little objectivity, if any, and comes down to a great deal of subjectivity in the choice of awards. It matters not what level of expertise you thing you have employed to do the job. Proof of this is how one piece of work is rejected from a competition and yet gets top honours at the next competition. If it hasn't happened to you yet..... it possibly will if you enter enough competitions. I do not see how issuing awards will improve what we have got going now. The kite lines are carved out of each color block, which makes for a real good gauge of just how much my paper is shrinking as I'm printing, as it shows up the mis-registrations. The string lines were embossed after all the color blocks. I also embossed in the kite ribs in the body of the kite, but they turned out to not show up with all the design. > > > You put 'jizuri' in the design ... does this imply that you will also be > issuing this print in another version done by pro printers? ;-) Glad you asked.
