Gayle wrote: > I've started lifting weights again, getting ready > for using that baren. Good grief! I suspect that there might be a wee misunderstanding involved here. Gayle, I've been printmaking for 20 years now, the last 12 of that professionally, and I make a lot of prints ... a _lot_ of prints. But you know what? I'm a 120 lb. weakling. If Sadako and I were to arm-wrestle, the outcome would be in some doubt (I said 'if' because we've never tried - I know she doesn't want to embarrass me ...). I have no upper body strength, and I mean no as in _none_. My advice on how best to prepare for that week in June? Carve, carve, carve, carve, carve ... and bring the blocks with you. Graham may have a different viewpoint on this, but I think that far and away the most valuable way you will be able to use that week of contact with more experienced printmakers, is in _printing_ practice, and for that, you will need some blocks ready. Why do I emphasize printing? Because even though I think I'm a 'hot-shot' carver, I recognize that 99% of the beauty and interest in a print comes from the printer's skill. A good printer can make an interesting print from _any_ blocks. Give a good printer a barn board and a hammer and he should be able to make an interesting print. So I want to practice _printing_ in June! And as I said, for that you are going to need some blocks. ** Maybe this is a good time to add something for the people who are coming in June. I'm sure that Graham has a pretty full schedule planned for you, but I want to toss out another idea for you to consider. I myself will of course have my own printing bench and stuff set up somewhere in one corner (or a closet or someplace, wherever he finds room for me), and will be working on one of my Surimono prints during that week. But I think it would also be useful if you had a chance to see how a more experienced printer worked with _your_ blocks, so I would like to encourage you to bring along a set of blocks for a print you made previously. We could do it one of two ways: I could sit there and simply act as your 'hands' while you direct operations (working as an artist/printer collaboration), or you could just let me print them in some way that _I_ think would make a good print. Either way, it should be pretty educational I think ... ** On another matter - I need a small favour please - would one of the [Baren] people who is involved with Ray's 'Printhouse' project, please do a small 'review' of the place and the website for the 'Organizations' section of the Encyclopedia ... Ray is opening up the site to the public this weekend, and I'd like to have a link in that section of the Encyclopedia for him. I don't mean a long story - take a look in that section to see what I mean (the 'Other Sources of Information' section of the Encyclopedia). I have a few new cards to add and am waiting on the oregon package of dragons to add as well. I am told they are on their way... I havent worked it out yet but who made the wonderful origami dragon?? Its beautiful. There are examples of a whole lot of other printmakers including bareners on the Print AUstralia website at http://www.acay.com.au/~severn Plus enough links to print based sites to keep you busy for weeks This website is being rebuilt off line at the moment, so be prepared for some changes some time in the future. The site was originally started as the website the Print Council of Australia would like to have if they were online. I even offered to build them a free one but they are grossly underfunded and overworked and havent been able to accept my offer yet. The new site will seek to cover the gap the PCA have left by not having their quarterly Journal on-line. There will be an e-zine focusing on Aus print activities. Early days yet, will give you more info about this and other new things coming, once I've finished building. Its taking a long time because its a complete site re-build and Im doing about one hour per day. Julio, did you get my mail? It maps sections of an image and makes "hot-spots" linked to whatever I want to link to. Yes yes, you can do this manually with HTML, but please! how primitive! So aaaaaanyway! I thought it would be neato to have a World Map of Printmaking sites, huh? huh? Okay, well, _I_ like the idea. SO! if you live in the world (I, for one, have been accused of belonging to another planet) AND you would like to be part of the world map of printmaking, send me your URL and your general location in the world and I will give you a "hot spot" all of your own. I must warn you I already have some of you all mapped out, like Australia and GS in Canada, and of course our friends in Japan, Brazil, Mexico, England, and Cuba (I stuck you there, Julio). What I thought I could do is get as many sites as will fit and upload it to my website. Visitors could then look at the map, click on Brazil or Mexico or France and find printmaker's from that neck of the woods. Oh man, I haven't had this much fun since Yuki got her lovely big-fat head stuck in the security bars of the back door (it's been a while, today she could not get her muzzle through there). Send! March 24th, 2000 ************************************************* The [Baren] NewsFeed is still here, trying to keep you on top of what's going on in the [Baren] world! EXCHANGES (*) The deadline for Exchange #5 arrives in one short week, and coordinator Maria is ready to get out her whip to chase down the stragglers. (Remember, this lady is used to dealing with a pair of _wolves_, so she won't hesitate to use that thing on a mere printmaker ...) As usual, the excitement about the exchange and seeing all the prints starts to build as the end of each exchange nears. We'll keep you posted when they go up on the [Baren] website in a couple of weeks ... (*) Sign up for Exchange #6 begins on the 1st of the month. As always, first priority will go to members who did not participate in the immediately preceding exchange. This advance period is for _one week only_, so get in there quickly. General sign-up begins on April 8th. Remember, the theme for this one will be 'open', and the paper size is relatively small, so for some of you 'newbies' who have been standing at the edge of the pool with your toe dipped into the water ... it's time to jump in! http://www.w.com/forum/exchange/exchange_sign-up.html (*) The SwapShop is slowly getting up to steam with prints on the way, and a lot more promised. This early period, waiting for the first folders to fill up, is the most difficult, but once we get this ball rolling, things should move more smoothly. SwapShop info page: http://www.w.com/forum/swapshop/index.html ACTIVITIES Maria Arango, editor of our new newsletter, 'Baren-Suji', tells me that the first issue is all primed for launch exactly as planned on April 1st. Only _she_ knows just how much work went into getting it ready for publication - and she's not telling! Remember that Baren-Suji will not be sent out over the forum, as it is too long (and too colourful!). If you want to receive this first copy 'hot off the press', visit the sign-up page at: http://w.com/forum/newsletter/sub_newsletter.html Maria is now collecting submissions for the second issue. Get on it! EXHIBITIONS (*) Julio's dynamite exhibition at the library in Skokie, Illinois is now primed and ready to explode. Julio's family has now completely forgotten what he looks like, as they can't find him under the vast pile of framed prints in their living room. But those will be cleared out any minute now, when he hangs the show. Once we get some photos, we'll be letting you know where you can see them. If there is anything you can do to help at this late stage, Julio can be contacted at: Julio.Rodriguez@walgreens.com (*) Greg's Kampala exhibition also seems to be on schedule (at least we haven't heard that he's trying to 'get out of town' quickly ...). It's still not too late to get your prints to him ... if you're in any doubt about this, get in touch with him _soon_, at: grobison@swiftuganda.com WORKSHOP NEWS John Amoss over in Georgia is now part-way through his second (annual?) woodblock printmaking class. He says that the students are so enthusiastic that he actually has to walk over to the wall and turn off the room lights in order to clear them out every evening. Looking forward to some photos, John! IN THE MARKETPLACE Visited eBay recently? A couple of woodcut books by Lynd Ward are going this week (auctions ending the 28th). Type 'Lynd Ward' into the search engine to find them ... How about Bibliofind? No less than _three_ copies of Frank Morley Fletcher's book on Woodblock Printmaking are available on Bibliofind right now, and one of them is priced as a 'steal'! Head for http://www.bibliofind.com, and type 'F Morley Fletcher' or 'Frank Morley Fletcher' into the search engine. ADMINISTRATION Remember that a section of 'quick links' to many [Baren] activities is always available on the main website. If you can't remember 'where to go', check that page at: http://w.com/forum/admin.html *** This has been a second sample of the [Baren] NewsFeed, trying to keep you in touch with what's going on in [Baren]. If it starts to get support from members with 'hot' news that can't wait three months for the next scheduled issue of 'Baren-Suji', it might even be repeated! ******************************************************************** Send items for the next News Feed to news@w.com ******************************************************************** ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V10 #947 ****************************
