Usually you would write on the back of the print what you had done, such as "key block blue indigo, hand colored with watercolor" or something of this nature. It gives future collectors of your work more information, and collectors love more information. I often sign, date and name my work on the back as I do a lot of bleed prints and it is hard to name them on the front. Congratulations on your success lately, nothing like selling work and getting the response that people love what you do, it is better than chocolate! Andrea.........have a wonderful trip....!!!! One of the nice things that is happening here at home in relation to the Skokie Library exhibit is the daily arrival of letters, packages and bios from fellow bareners. Last night I had another two wonderful packages waiting for me at home. The one was from Maria with a couple of engraved blocks (one maple and one resingrave) and the prints to go along with the blocks. These will be on display at the library along with a variety of tools (pro baren, japanese knives, brushes, brayers, burins, etc..) to show the difference between wood engravings and woodcuts. The other package I received was from the dragon exchange with the Oregon University group. Some very wonderful prints (15 randomly picked dragons) in this particular grouping including two very nice dragons from our very own Josephine Severn. Just out of curiosity I would like to know how many bareners participated in this non-baren exchange......perhaps we can compare prints somehow...many artists included cards...but others will be hard to identify. thanks...Julio ------------------------------ From: "Bea Gold" Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2000 15:10:22 -0800 Subject: [Baren 8950] RE: more dragons, editioning (again!) charset="iso-8859-1" Thanks Sarah, for raising the handpainting concept again and congratulations on you successes! I have enjoyed the idea that some of my prints can be individually painted even though they always use the same key block. I could experiment with the paint quality -like watercolor on some and thick paint applied with palate knife on others, which I have done before the keyblock is printed over the paint. I have thought of going back and cutting color blocks for the blocks I hand colored but now I may try again and see how I feel numbering them as you suggested. Message posted by: Sarah Hi all, I'm a little breathless, a lot of stuff has been happening, I got a call from the show I told you folks about at SVM in Baton rouge & they sold a print, are giving me an award for another print, and have someone interested in looking at a bunch of my work. Anyway, just to make my day even more fun, I received my dragons from the U. of Oregon exchange (I'm know some of you others did this), lots of great, fun, interesting stuff & some familiar masterpiece dragons too :) now for my editioning question, I was told by a friend of mine who was a printmaking major at Rutgers that it would be OK to mark a series of hand-tinted woodblock prints as E:V:1/50, E:V:2/50, etc, as the keyblock is printed but the image is tinted by hand and therefore differs from print to print, also the paper is not all the same. What do you other knowledgeable folks out there think? This sounded good to me but I wanted to make sure that there wasn't some crazy "rule" out there somewhere that would make this method "wrong" etc as I am still learning about this editioning matter. I know some of you don't like the handtinting idea, but this is what suits this particular print and remember that the early Japanese woodblock prints used this method :) Thanks all, ------------------------------ From: Cynthia Wilson Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2000 15:33:16 -0800 Subject: [Baren 8951] Re: Collections and Exhibitions and resumes What a good idea Josephine.
