Wonderful stuff to look at. I especially like the "Takemitsu Triptych" http://www.connectworks.co.uk/printeurope/ And I am really having fun going over (&over&over) the Woodlike Matsumura catalog. I am trying to decide what to buy first - kind of like a kid in a candy store. I am really having a hard time picking paper. Any suggestions, Dave? Maria - my prints are on their way! And Jim, the next block is drawn & ready to cut for the swapshop prints. Rollin' along here! If you're completely lost looking at that list of papers, maybe try these: #8 kihada (thin type). =20 #9 azusa These are 'han kusa' papers (kozo mixed with pulp), and have a response something similar to the hosho that Graham will mention in a few minutes when he also responds to your post. And at 530 and 450 yen per sheet (respectively), they won't break your bank. When I come in June I'll probably be bringing some of these (or similar papers) for practice use ... Dave ------------------------------ From: Wanda Date: Sun, 19 Mar 2000 17:54:14 -0800 Subject: [Baren 8933] Re: Matsumura-san's paper choices ...=20 So the 40% K, 60%P would be Kozo & Pulp, respectively? Then what is "BD", "G" & "R"? "R" would be rag, maybe? Actually - the more I look at the catalog & the more I read the numbers & look at the photos - the more I start to understand. And the paper sampl= es that came with the catalog are really luscious. Just to see the photos o= f the more costly Barens - explains a lot. And makes me even more eager to try to make one from Michael's directions. I think I will order one of the beginner's kits, just to sample those ite= ms & try out the little plastic baren. And definitely some of the postcard size papers. Thanks, Dave! "R" would be rag, maybe? OK, here you go: K is Kozo P is pulp BD means 'board dried' and PD means dried on a hot plate G indicates that the paper is sized R indicates that it has been treated to inhibit 'creeping' of the pigment (I have no idea what they have done ...) And the number you see at the end of the list of letters refers to the 'monme' ... the 'weight' of the paper. Larger numbers generally mean heavier, thicker paper. The only other thing to mention is about the three papers on the first page of his sample pak. They are in pairs, left and right - the same paper but the one on the left of each pair has those 'laid' lines at about 3cm intervals. (hold them up to the light and you will see what I mean). Dave P.S. A small request for assistance, please. Dan has been trying to send me an image for the web site, but despite repeated attempts, we haven't been able to get it across. So I started trying to put one together today. So much has happened in recent months. Julio sent us the title for the Skokie show, so I've got that, but I can't find any reference to the title and precise details of the Kampala one. I spent several hours this morning cleaning out the mail box and searching for this info. Similarly, I know it was announced where the baren collections were to reside and I can't find that information either.=20 I apologise for not writing it down at the time (I will in future) can someone put me out of my misery, please? I was thinking while I was doing the resume that a good approach in the future might be to write the ideal resume that you would like to have in say five years time and then go about making it so. Of course you can only try to win art prizes or approach galleries, but there's a lot of other content that you do have control over and can arrange yourself.
