Bunk bunk bunk. As for low quality impression of my work and myself...I don't think so, some of us who are quite successful at not only selling over the net but also promoting our work through the net, making contacts that resulted in sales over the net, having a gallery look at our work over the net resulting in a contract resulting in sales OVER THE NET, among other benefits. Excuse me for yelling, I was offended by your comments. I have a workshop coming up and the information for the class and supply list is on my web site, already two sign ups OVER THE NET and have not advertised yet. An artist, a visual person, having their work (visual work), shown over the net, a visual medium: a perfect combination. I do recommend having your own website, revising it with fresh work often, having reasonable prices and a full price list, an easy to fill out form for people to order, take checks and guarantee your work. You must promote your website by signing up for rings, exchange links with as many suitable folks as you can, belong to lists, submit your website to search engines. Give superior customer service by personalizing every reply to a request for information. Have a guestbook. Have a friendly and useful website. Keep track of your hits. I sell about 2-8 prints a month, which won't pay the rent but it is always exciting to ship off one of those litlle things to someone who just happenned to be browsing the web. More than that, I get feedback from fellow artists and compliments from people who found some useful information in my website. In the lonely world of an artist, this is more human contact than I would ever get otherwise (I tend to be a hermit). The reaction from people who receive my business card is: "oh, you have a website, will you let me know when you put up new work?" Kaboom, they go on my e-mailing list of customers. In art fairs and shows, I hand out the business card with my website PROUDLY smack on the front of it. It gives people a chance to browse over my work in the privacy of their homes. Suddenly, here comes another order form right to my e-mail, neatly filled out... Incidentally, promoting your website is free, form cgi scripts are free, exchanging links is free, belonging to webrings and lists is free. I pay $12.95/month for unlimited web space. Some of the more sophisticated shopping cart software is not free, expect to pay $100-300, more if you decide to take credit cards, which is a big and complicated step. I'm not there yet. Others in the list can speak to selling in the e-shops from the big websites (e-bay/amazon), we had this conversation a while back. Long time since I had any but remember them with pleasure from when I was a kid in NYC. We missed you at the LA gathering and thank you for showing us what you've been working on. I'd love to see the real print on exhibition. Can't quite get the different methods on the internet. Have a great trip and report back. I've been working on cherry wood for my 'junin toiro' print - what a difference from the shina I've been using! Much harder work but I'm able to get some detail I could never do with shina. My tools are dulling very fast, my arms are tiring faster but it is very satisfying. I said a while ago that I thought I might try the keyblock in cherry and the color blocks in shina and someone (sorry can't remember who) said to be careful about the blocks not expanding the same way. Any suggestions? Maria, did you get the photos of my work bench to show people? John and Dan, my bench is low - coffee table height but I have a portable drafting table on top, that I turn facing UP for cutting and Down for printing. It has really worked for me. The table also has eight drawers that hold all my cutting and printing tools and paints! I love it. I have photos to show if Maria doesn't have it. Any suggestions? That was me. Cherry will expand across the grain, quite a bit, when wet. Shina, since it is made up of layers veneer with the grain crossing each other, will expand very little, and evenly in both directions. They just won't match up. The only way that you can possibly make it work, is to use cherry blocks like the new ones that Dave has been using, with a thick veneer of cherry on an inner core of cross grain woods. If you matched the thickness of your shina, they would probably expand the same. The only problem is that as far as I know, those laminated cherry blocks are only available from Japan ($$$). I will be experimenting with producing my own, but first have to finish the plans for and build the new wood shop. You can probably find some one to produce them for you locally by re-sawing cherry and gluing the faces to waterproof plywood, still might end up expensive, but it's worth checking around. It's certainly nice to be wanted. However, the government cut back on my welfare payments so I can no longer live the life of the idle riche. There are some things though that US residents do not take into consideration, usually. First of all the banking system and communication outside the US is not so reliable. Which means, you don't no if you'll get paid, you don't know who'll stick a finger in your account and it's not fair for your client to have to pay for all the banking stupidities they come up with all the time. I DO promote my work on the web, remember? But, art clients in Europe and as far as I know in parts of Asia will never buy something they haven't laid their hands on. If they do they'll be expecting something of the same quality level like 1000 knives for cutting hair from your ear or nose, wonder-powder for loosing 100 kilos over night and special instructions on how to find them the next night and all that garbage you see at telemarkets. If I sale my works (and I don't complain) it's the personal contact that helps me and actually does 75% of the work. Maybe things in Australia are other than I presume, in that case I have made a mistake speaking too generally. But that's a story our lovely Australoprinters will tell, right? Maybe it's time we all got together and made some regular shows each country a year, what do you think? Wouldn't that be lovely?
