I'm not doing ten of anything because that would be too difficult on such a small board. I'm not a "fine line" carver as you know. The design I have finally decided upon is quite black and white but I may introduce some color in the background and clothing on two of the people. I was going crazy trying to think of something, then it occurred to me that in the town near us (where we all shop) you will see Amish people saying hello to their neighbor who is shopping too. The neighbor might wear his hair spiked high and he might be all in black, like the Amish but his version is different and he probably has a tatoo and a six pack, while the Amish have armfuls of groceries. The neat thing is they've stopped noticing each other's differences since they are neighbors. They live across the road from one another. It's just Joe Szelinsky and the Eli Yoders saying hi. I was having so much trouble with the background on this one, that I decided this little meeting of the three people will be back home where they meet out front on the road after shopping. So maybe, you can think of differences in your area and go with just one contrast. The main point is though that there seems no "problem" - it's only the time set for the finish of Exchange #5 and you've NOT yet got the perfect idea formed that you feel you need... All I'd do is drop out of #5 and work on something that will fit another Exchange in the more open plan idea. I'm one who takes ages to get something ready (or, maybe, as I like it) - but there are some who can actually draw on a block and cut it out almost at the same time... with great success... you may not be like this. All you need could be time for the ideas to gel and come forth. I'm sure someone else can fill the empty Exchange space - and when your "right" idea comes, you'll KNOW it. At present... it isn't there! Nothing wrong in joining the slow lane... hope all goes well. >"one man's meat is another man's poison"? Em... The first edition could be only the ley block (this would be standard) numbered 1-30 first state. The edition with the color would be numbered 1-30 second state. Some printmakers would number the first edition with 1-30 and the second edition with roman numerals, so anyone seeing both prints would realise there were two editions of the same block. The first way would be more informative to the eventual collector, but both are done. Barbara Jeanne Norman Chase wrote: > Dear Woodblock printmaking experts > > A problem has arisen re; editioning. Or is this something that should not be done at all. Yes indeed you can take a block and print it to create another image and print. Well at least I did. If you feel that it is very close in its imagery then call it another state. I did this using the same blocks for Rain Dance....making another State and changing the name to 'Sun Dance'. In this instance I change the colour of a). the backgroud. b). the umbrellas. Not a problem. I have some beautiful blocks for the lighthouse series and have debated with myself about taking the best of those and doing a one colour job. The jury.....me.....is still out on that one. I have seen prints which have "second edition" before the numbering and this makes the situation quite clear. Many people, myself included, use second state to show the progress of the work through the proofing process. For example, My Baren #4 print was state 1 when I first proofed it. I was pleased with the result and printed the Baren edition as second state and wrote this on the print. I will have a small separate edition for sale and this will be state 3 as I made a few minor additional cuts. The print will not be noticably different, except to a magnifying glass. I usually leave the print for a while before publishing it, to help me decide on my final cuts, and so only the final state is normally printed. Meeting the deadline of the exchange led to me printing it as state 2. I do think that it is good policy to make second editions clear. A friend bought an expensive print by a leading UK artist. The edition was small and the price was high. A year later, he found the same print for sale in a larger edition. Not only did he feel that the "contract" of numbering had been broken, but also that this could go on until many editions had been printed. - --- John Ryrie wrote: > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Jeanne Norman Chase > To: > Sent: Wednesday, February 16, 2000 4:04 AM > Subject: [Baren 8426] Editioning > > > > Jeanne said: > Is this ethical to print only the keyblock for a > separate edition. > > And if it is, does it have to be stated in some > way that their is another > > colored edition. > > In the European tradition such an edition is called > a second state and is > quite common see Rembrandt, Picasso, Munch...
