Graham The print is signed Toyokuni - it also bears a Kunisada signature. This would make it by Kunisada or Toyokuni III. The print was done around the mid 1840's when Kunisada took on the Toyokuni name. I hope this helps. Ok, I want everyone to understand that I agree with Dave, prints have intrinsic value beyond their market value as a collectable, -but-, it is an unfortunate fact that in the collector driven market of Japanese prints, a borderless print generally does not have much -collectable- value (unless it is a rare print, etc.) The European prints that you mention do not usually have the same amount of information contained in those missing borders, i.e., original printing date, publisher, edition, re-print dates, etc. It is unfortunate, but the market dictates what it wants too. This does not mean that the prints have no value to look at and study, though. I have a few classic images of Hasui's that I got in a collection of Shin Hanga, that some bone-head framer inexplicably cut the borders off of, so that he had to extend the matte over the edge of the image, and acid burn it with cheap mat board, but I wouldn't consider giving them away. If you leave enough room around the printed areas, they won't get inked, the standard space is two fingers with, says Dave. Also, a paper mask can be used during inking to keep ink off unwanted areas, but that slows down printing a little. I don't use the Japanese method of printing myself, but I remember a few months back David described his method of masking with aluminium foil taped to the back of the block so that it could be folded back while inking. My interest in market value was...... if giving it to the Art Gallery they want to be able to give you a receipt and would ask me what I wanted. ......Now that it has no $ value that option does not exit. Baren is going at a snail's pace these days - with the internet apparently under seige by something called "denial of service" attacks. So, I thought it might be a good time to remind everyone to send their check to Julio to help with the framing costs of the Skokie Library show. The $15. will go to help with the costs of framing - and since Julio is doing all the work, the least we can do is pay the cost of framing, right? I feel like one of the disc jockeys on our local public radio station during "pledge week". But, please, don't forget this - it's going to be a really neat thing, with newspaper coverage and everything. So pick up that phone and dial......oops. Send your check or money order for $15.00 to: Julio Rodriguez 3801 Dobson Skokie, IL 60076 USA I know he'll appreciate it. And if the spirit moves you - send a little extra, it can't hurt! It was called "Kimono as Canvas" featuring contemporary textile works inspired by the Kimono form plus tradional Japanese woodblock prints relating to the Kimono, among them were several by Utagawa Kunisada eg "Prince Genji"...plus about 10 others. I have seen similar prints before but the detail in this selection was unbelievable and I will be back there again tomorrow to spend more time with them. These, I presume are originals...with a price tag of AUS$750.00 each. Gallery East commissioned thirteen contemporary fibre and textile artists - - 5 from Western Australia, 4 from NSW, (Aust.) one from ACT, (Aust.) and three from Japan - Keiko Kanesaki, Horoyuki Shindo, and Koji Takaki to create work inspired by the kimono form. They too were exquisite and very different from the traditional silk embroided kimonos we are so familiar with. Koji Takaki Ma had used woodblock geometic patterns as part of her design. I was once a very keen weaver and one of the Australian kimonos which took my fancy was woven with very fine blue wool with loopy nylon thread interlaced between the stripes (2 Shaft loom). If any of you are weavers and visit Japan make your No 1 visit to the Toyoda (Yes, with a "d") museum in Nagoya...No 1, No 1!! For Josephine, John and Barnaby (welcome to Baren) this exhibition is to tour Australia this year and 2001...(I'll get details from Gallery East for the times it is to be nearer to you all) ...Print Australia may like to get details too, Josephine. Thank you too to Georga, Horacio and Dimitris for your wonderful dragons...all arrived safely but very tired and thirsty...all that water but nowhere to drink! There is a similar exhibition of Korean textiles at the Melbourne Immigration Museum at the moment I'll try and fined out if that will be touring.
