Fleisher Art Memorial's "Challenge #2" as written by _The Philadelphia Inquirer_'s Ed Sozanski. Mr. Sozanski has some interesting things to say about drawing in general, as well as some rather insightful comments about the work of yours truly. Unfortunately, on the webpage you are denied the rather glorious illustration that was published in the paper (a rather large reproduction of my own _The Masters Tocci_, huzzah!). Getting reviewed is no small thing, we are sure here in Portland that the only way for our gallery to get into the paper is for a murder to be committed in the doorway and then it would be on page 53. His delicate, exquisitely detailed touch with the pen produces images that display the soft, subtle tonalities of aquatint or lithographic prints. Only after soaking up the alluring physicality of the images does one consider the depictions, which, as noted, puts a humanistic, even humorous, face on a mildly taboo subject." Congratulations James on a thoughtful body of work. This critic is lauding the _printerly_ quality of the drawings. How interesting. Well done. I'm beginning a series of woodblocks and that is how I came upon this group. I usually paint in oils but in my undergraduate days at University of Cincinnati I worked in litho and relief printing. Next month I'm heading to the island of Hydra in Greece for 30 days to visit another painter. My intention is to complete 30 wood blocks (one for each day) 8"x8" and journal my thoughts on the same size paper. I'll print them in black and white. I'll also do color sketches for reference to use on future paintings when I return. I've probably bitten off more than I can chew-since it is my first visit to Greece! I've found, though, the more specific I am with a project on my travels, the more I accomplish. Clarity is power-I've heard.( Also, a message to Dimitris, I would appreciate any information on Greece. I fly into Athens and then I take a ferry to Hydra. I'm hoping to take a few exploring days near Athens. ) I'm looking forward to exchanging ideas with all of you.
