Yes, Japan was a great experience. After six weeks, I lived with 10 host families mostly in the south of Kiushu Island (cities: Miyazaky, Kanoya, Miyakonojo, Kagoshima, etc.), visiting interesting places about both the traditional and the contemporary faces of Japan. The aim of the fellowship was to exchange experiences about our professional careers with japanese people (the mexican team that travelled to Japan was composed of five members from different professional fields, and I was the only related to art), so I also could visit museums, galleries and ateliers of some young artists living in the area. Of course, I felt surprised about some facts in the country. Although six weeks is maybe not enough time to speak about such a deep culture, I liked very much the way japanese people can macht the technology with the tradition (computarized toilets in traditional houses, etc.), and also how accurated are they with the time (opposite to 'mexican' time). About art, I had the chance to look at very good examples of tradicional hanga prints, with valued for all the trip. I came back home, tired, with a litle 'hangover' (you know, sake, shochu, etc.), but very happy inside myself, knowing that I made really good friends there. - -------- Julio, that webpage of the 'parasites galleries' made me about to vomitate. But that's not a horror tale, is, unfortunately, a reallity. I have already received a number of interesting messages from Barbara Mason, Jack Reisland and John Ryrie. I feel very welcome indeed. I graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1981 with a BFA in drawing and printmaking. I immediately accepted a commission in the Army so I could eat regularly. I am now returning to my roots, as a beginner, with a lot more life experience. Any advice will be eagerly devoured. I am currently setting up shop in my garage studio. I am jockeying for a position as an art teacher (I never gave it up) here in South Carolina. In the meantime, I teach writing at a local high school. My biggest challenge at the moment is to obtain a good quality baren. Any contacts or suggestions? I don't speak Japanese, although I do speak enough Korean to get myself in trouble. I visited all of the available web sites on your list of suppliers with no luck. I won't bend your ear any more. This looks like an interesting group.
