[Baren]: The mailing list / discussion forum for woodblock printmaking. Baren Digest Tuesday, 21 December 1999 Volume 09 : Number 828 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Gayle Wohlken Date: Mon, 20 Dec 1999 10:08:55 -0500 Subject: [Baren 7238] Re: Baren Digest V9 #827 On the controversy of uplifting versus dark art. It's all expression of the heart. The dark heart has much to say, as does the light heart. Each has something to give to the rest. My son, Jeremy, is an art therapist and sometimes the young people he works with have deep stories to tell, but they are being healed. They have told Jeremy his artroom is a wonderful sanctuary for them. I have been greatly touched by Kathe Kollwitz' painful woodcuts. Those haunted eyes are carried out of the image into the world where you will look closer at the eyes you pass on the street. Is there something we can do to alleviate the pain? Had I not seen Kollwitz's woodcuts, would I notice this, or would I just pass by this odd person whose eyes tell a story that I don't understand. When I found Alois, my dear high school friend living in the city as destitute as any I have ever met, would I have reached out to him had I not been taught through the dark art I have studied how deep the hurts can go? The trip to Japan was wonderfull and it completed all my expectances. It' a Big country not only because of its beauty, but mainly because of its people. Of course this oportunity will be present forever in my heart, and I hope it will bring me light to find and keep my way as an artist. I'm still a little bit confused about the current subjets are discussing in the forum (dragons, 'happy' and 'sad' art), but surelly I will engage on it soon. Also I saw new names (to me), so again hello to everyone, Juan Guerrero, MEXICO ------------------------------ From: Wanda Date: Mon, 20 Dec 1999 20:56:45 -0800 Subject: [Baren 7240] Re: HII, Again =?iso-8859-1?Q?me=A1=A1?= Welcome home, Juan! Glad you are back with us, and glad you had a good time in Japan. Tell us all about it when you have time. The Dragon is an informal exchange of small dragon prints sent directly between members. Pete White has a page up for addresses and sign up at: http://www.geocities.com/area51/5426/baren.html And the discussion of "happy" art and "dark" art is based upon the differences of the prints in the Pan-Am exhibit: http://www.umanitoba.ca/schools/art/gallery/hpgs/mpa/mpa.html And Dave's pix of the Ban-Ban group's work at: http://woodblock.com/temporary/ban-ban/1999/frame/index_frame.html Hope this helps! Also, Juan, you can go to the archives & see what you've missed while you were gone. We have had some interesting things going on. And don't forget to check out the "message board": http://woodblock.com/forum/messageboard/guestbook.html To all Baren-ers: Frankly, although Dave's "best one" is certainly wonderful & colorful, and very technically good, my favorite prints are #02 and #04. Print #02 is all in greys which I assume is done with shades of Sumi-e ink (hope I'm not saying this wrong), and #04 is a dead or dying tree, with horribly pruned branches. Very graphic images and very well done - IMHO! Anyone care to debate? :-) Wanda ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V9 #828 ***************************
