Music works to lift negative moods when the listeners first starts with music that reflects their negative mood and gradualy moves toward a happier or calmer mood. Music at total odds with a negative mood will irritate instead of soothe. As the naturally pessimistic daughter of an inordinately cheerful mother, I feel that there are are two major groups of personality. I have learned to respect both groups. My mother does not like to look at my "painful" work, but she gets down in the trenches to help with real humans in very depressive situations. She likes cheerful art, because it resonates with her internal music. To write off her internal reality as "fluff " can lack as much true depth as those that tell me to quit what I do to be more cheerful. My dark work, however has gotten a positive response with people who have suffered from some of the painful experiences I portray. The sharing of the socially unacceptable expression of pain can be very healing. Cheerful work often leaves me cold, because it does not resonate. ------------------------------ From: Studio Dalwood Date: Sun, 19 Dec 1999 22:14:06 +1100 Subject: [Baren 7229] Art & Aesthetics While we are talking about aesthetic issues, I thought you might like to look at this page which I have just found http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/kai_ac/aesth.htm#lectu Also, I found this one fascinating. http://www.artswire.org/current.html#news6 Note that 200,000 visited the front page of this artist's site, but only 2000 were interested in whether it was grounded in reality. I believe the FBI intervention may be real, though if it was taken offline, does this mean that the site has been re-located or re-loaded? Got you intrigued now, havent I? ;-) Josephine ------------------------------ From: "Fell" Date: Sun, 19 Dec 1999 18:47:31 -0800 Subject: [Baren 7230] exchange #3 Hi, did i miss something...the 3rd exchange was my first and i do not know how long it takes to collate them..have they been sent out yet? is the mail slow this time of year? it seems that noone else is talking about them. if you could let me in on the delivery....thanks frank fell ------------------------------ From: B Mason Date: Sun, 19 Dec 1999 21:47:49 -0800 Subject: [Baren 7232] exchange #3 to Frank and everyone else it exchange #3: You did not miss anything, they did not go out yet and this is not the usual plan. The cases are finally here and all the prints are finally accounted for. We had a little scare with two sets from out of the USA, one was simply late and one got lost in Paris. Not too bad a place to be lost in, but far from Oregon. Everything is finally a go. Wanda and I have talked it over and because of the Christmas madhouse with shipping we have decided to send them out right after Christmas, so they will be a new years treat for everyone. I certainly hope the next exchanges do not have such a long delay, but as those cases had to swim all the way from Japan, and there was a dock strike on top of it, they were late. We will post the day we send them out. Best wishes for a wonderful holiday Barbara and Wanda ------------------------------ From: michael schneider Date: Mon, 20 Dec 1999 10:46:23 +0100 Subject: [Baren 7235] Re: A few points ... It would turn into a lengthy discussion to talk over what really drives us. To live a "happy life" might be one reason, but if so only one. This "I want, I want..." thinking has not really proven to be the guarantee for a development of mankind to the better. Just think this ending century over. All too often, our desires for a satisfying life is abused by profit driven suggestions. You, living in japan can see this phenomena every day I believe. The society is promising freedom and happiness to the one who is successful and earns enough money. People are doing there best to earn more and more money to be able to pay the price. But the money they earn is never enough to buy freedom and happiness. So they keep on working and hoping, that one day they will make it and in the meantime, they can buy what the commercials are telling them to own means to own a little bit of the things they really desire. I would like to continue this discussion a little bit longer, but I will head off for the alps over the holidays to visit my family. Therefor I wont be able to keep contact to "baren" for some days. Merry christmas to all of you.( a little bit early ) michael ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V9 #827 ***************************
