I actually got the idea for the horizontal page from Salon magazine. They had a section with art projects which adopted the gallery metaphor, scrolled horizontally and jumped to a close up from each image. This is the same format that I use at my own site for my 'exhibitions' It probably has evolved more than once - it is a good idea and they have a way of doing that. I really enjoyed this baren/ballen strand. I've been trying to check back in my references but my recollection is that the ballen was the ball-like kid-covered tool that was used to apply the ink to the block by dabbing, rather than a burnishing tool. This was a common tool before the invention of the roller or brayer. The illustrations certainly rang a bell in this context. I have examined at least one of these and there were certainly extensive traces of ink on the artifact. I love the sense of technology travelling across and between the continents, though. Thats what we are doing with this forum. Best wishes to you all from the first snowfall of this English winter Andy ------------------------------ From: B Mason Date: Mon, 13 Dec 1999 06:57:27 -0800 Subject: [Baren 7160] print club Dave, I enjoyed the prints, makes me feel humble, but determined. They were wonderful. How many blocks do you think were used on the "best one"? There is end grain. and face grain. ..... where one sees the broad ovals and wide grain lines. and edge grain ..... where one sees the narrow bands of grain lines. What is side grain. ? I just picked up the most wonderful old, out of print paper back book by Escher. It was published first in Holland and translated from the Dutch by John. E. Brigham. It was purblished again in 1971. A great find. In it he has his very early pieces such as; the first regular division of a plane surface. This was when he was a pupil at the School of Architecture in Haarlem in 1922. I am very thrilled to see the amazing work that he did when just a lad. The title of the piece is "Eight Heads".Of course there are many more than just 8 heads, fantastically repeated in his usual style. I am lucky as my friend owns this wonderful old , old store that carries used books. The store is so old that the wooden floor is lined with metal to hold the floor up. When you walk on the floor it is as if you are in a boat. She calls me whenever she gets in something about printmaking. So far I have been establishing a great collection of books on the subject. Wow! Thanks for the correction. My "Complete Guide to Prints and Printmaking" lied to me. The exhibition was http://www.nga.gov.au/Landscapes/ An Australian landscape print exhibition from the National Gallery in Canberra. You will find more of her work Im sure in the same gallery's collections. Ask John, he apparently has visited with her in her studio (envy). She's in a different State to me. Is she in Tasmania or Victoria these days John? David, Oh for a digital camera... The fans. Can you buy the rib structure premade and then just add the print, or do you have to make the entire thing? Am going to do as you asked re dragon print questions. Julio, I suggest putting the pieces behind plexi instead of matting and framing... only because when matting the work needs to be somehow hinged or attached to a backing board. Not only is that an amazing amount of work but it could disturb the print. Archival corners are available but only work on particular prints (and are very costly). The only really trying thing about plexi is the cleaning part and that plexi can have a lot of static (and then attract lots of dirt). You might want to consider when looking at the prints, what you want to do about ones that have a deckled edge, or use the whole sheet. If you have any questions, please ask. I am a framer full time (but fairly new at it) and I am sure there are other Baren members who have experience framing. I am going to be extremely busy for the next two or three days so I will probably not get to my email until then. - -Amanda ------------------------------ From: "John Ryrie" Date: Tue, 14 Dec 1999 20:41:26 +1100 Subject: [Baren 7172] side grain That's right about Durer the early woodcuts were cut by him, I've seen a documentary which had an actor as Durer cutting a block. He was using a 20th century engraving tool, but his beard was very convincing. He didn't print his prints and nether did any other artist at that time.
