[Baren]: The mailing list / discussion forum for woodblock printmaking. Baren Digest Thursday, 11 November 1999 Volume 09 : Number 776 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: szvetecz Date: Wed, 10 Nov 1999 17:16:11 -0600 Subject: [Baren 6566] Hello Thank you Josephine, Wanda, Graham, Julio, Philip (and anyone else I haven't mentioned) for welcoming me to the list. Years after I did an initial undergraduate degree in a non-art field, I "went back to school" and did undergraduate work in studio art with an emphasis on printmaking (primarily intaglio and lithography) at the University of Texas at Austin (USA); I then did a graduate degree in printmaking at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA). Currently I'm doing another grad degree--this one in library science. I joined baren to encourage myself to make woodblock prints, being as I no longer have access to an intaglio or lithography studio. This strategy appears to be working--I'm looking forward to figuring out a way to make woodblock prints in my small (and cluttered) apartment. At some point, I hope to be able to participate in one of the exchanges; I love looking at the web reproductions of the prints produced for two of the previous ones. I am enjoying reading the posts (I almost said "hearing your voices"). Thanks to all of you for helping me--a printmaking refugee--with the process of reinventing myself as a printmaker and woodblock print artist. Congrats to you. It looks remarkably like a platypus. I got my first website award today. Hubby is cracking whip, get back to studio, woman! Make art. Oh well Josephine ------------------------------ From: Graham Scholes Date: Wed, 10 Nov 1999 17:06:05 -0800 Subject: [Baren 6569] New member from Canada. >Hello everyone, >My name is Nicolas Kokis, I'm 25 years old and I've been doing woodcuts for >10 years now. Yaaaayyyy another Canadian..... Well Nicolas you and I can stand back to back if (not often if ever) an issues comes up. Let me see now, you in St John's Newfoundland ... me in Victoria BC. This is goina be tough , eh. So you left the Belly Provincy.... for what reason ? ....probably the same reason as my wife and I...(or is that me) Stupid language law probably. Newfoundland is such a wonder part of Canada. Nothing but nothing can touch it. It is the people and the warmth of their nature. An those outports and villages. A place artist kill for, to get the chance to paint..... So welcome aboard. Enjoy. Graham ------------------------------ From: Pedrobot@aol.com Date: Wed, 10 Nov 1999 20:41:37 EST Subject: [Baren 6571] Postcards > In Japan there is a tradition of exchanging New Years cards that are hand made and the size of a postcard, 4" x 6". What does anybody think of compiling a list of names and addresses for those interested in doing something like this? Not necesarily an exchange per se- I don't see that sign up sheet or anything would be needed. Just sort of an informal address book for anybody who wants to take part... if you decide not to send anything to Graham, for example, I'm sure he'll be gracious ;) [JOKE, for those of you who don't read smileeze) - --Pete ------------------------------ From: "John/Michelle Morrell" Date: Wed, 10 Nov 1999 20:19:43 -0900 Subject: [Baren 6572] Exchange #5 For my 2 cents, I think James' idea is much more interesting than the group project approach. Too much committee work as it is--and there are countless jokes about this or that looking like it was put together by a committee...
