Baren Digest Wednesday, 10 November 1999 Volume 09 : Number 775 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Jean Eger" Date: Thu, 11 Nov 1999 02:32:19 +0900 Subject: [Baren 6552] Dave, Regarding Matsura's mold stop, do you put the mold stop in the rice paste or in the paper size? What size is his paper that he is selling? I use clove oil. It is starting to rain here. I have to leave the door to the basement open now that I have my books and my flat files stored there, else they will all mold. The basement is on the same level as the kitchen and the studio. The house is dug into the hill on the lower level. That does not bother me one bit. When I started in this profession and for twenty years I have be wanting to work one day a week......a Sunday painter is an object that I don't think I'm good enough to obtain......damn. If its not OK I'll apologise in advance. I guess many of you will have seen this already? I dont know much about JApanese culture but this sounds like such a lovely thing to do. Sort of the old fashioned spirit of Christmas that I though was dead or killed by crass commercialism. Just wanted to share a nice thought with you.. Josephine In Japan there is a tradition of exchanging New Years cards that are hand made and the size of a postcard, 4" x 6". Each year everyone makes an image of the animal that belongs to that year, dog, monkey, etc. This New Year it is the Dragon for 2000. What a great mythic animal for the beginning of the next century. Last summer Moya Bligh, a part time printmaking instructor from Kyoto-Seika University in Japan, was teaching a workshop in Japanese waterbase woodcut printmaking here at the Univ. of Oregon. (I hosted her and taught with her.) She talked about this tradition and invited my print students to make dragon postcards to exchange with each other and with students in Japan. Each person will then have a little collection of dragon prints. My students are having such a great time making these prints (not in a limited edition) that I thought it might be fun to suggest this exchange to the print list. I don't know exactly how the exchange could or should be done but each person making a card could make as many as they like and somehow contact others making them to arrange for an exchange of cards. Is this idea just too unmanageable? What do you think of the idea and do you have any suggestions about how the exchange could be done? I've stumbled on BAREN just now as I'm not very internet adept. I grew up in Montreal Canada and am living now in St-John's Newfoundland Canada. I've just joined and am amazed at the existence of such a site. I will be teaching woodblock printing this January at the St-Michael's Printshop here in St-John's. My work is usually black and white and deals with humanistic themes (once I scan some you'll get to see, but as I have no scanner it won't be tomorrow...). It was the search for printing competitions that led me to the site. I still don't know how to view all p arts of the site as I need a password which I don't have, but I suppose I'll be getting it soon. So here's a big hello to this brilliant site (woodblock printers meet a lot of painters, sculptors and poets, but never seem to meet other woodcutters: meeting you all is extremely refreshing). Thank you for having me. Nicolas Kokis PS: (in reference to Josephine's e-mail)if the light tower is also the only source of light and the scene is at night, the effect will be gorgeous. ------------------------------ From: Julio.Rodriguez@walgreens.com Date: Wed, 10 Nov 1999 14:47:08 -0600 Subject: [Baren 6560] re: Welcome Hi Margaret, Hi Nicolas. The Baren site does not need a password. Just go to www.woodblock.com and from there all pages are accessible. The top group of links are mostly administrative ( who is baren, exchanges, show & tell, etc) while the bottom group of links take you to the immenseresources found in the Baren encyclopedia. About the only thing you need a password for is to upload stuff to some of our servers temp pages. Make sure you check out the "books" session. There is also a link to Baren listowner Dave Bull's personal web site. Nice to have you both onboard.....Julio ------------------------------ From: "Jeanne N. Maybe we could have two exchanges going at the same time as there are so many of us now, that I think we would have enough. Perhaps two themes and we could choose the one that we wanted to be included. in. It is designed to be used in the moistening water. I also put a few drops into each fresh batch of paste (unlike Matt, who makes a fresh batch up each morning, I use paste in batches of about a week at a time ...) > What size is his paper that he is selling? Hmmm... Interestingly enough, looking through his (printed) catalogue here, it doesn't say. I'll give him a ring later on this afternoon (it's still early morning here), and ask. Interesting too, as I'm looking at the catalogue just now, I notice this comment on the paper page: "All these papers are treated with sizing. In order to avoid bleeding of the pigments, please use the paper soon." *** New member Nicholas wrote: > I still don't know how to view all parts of the site as > I need a password which I don't have, and Julio replied: > About the only thing you need a password for is to upload > stuff to some of our servers temp pages. Actually Julio, you don't even need the password for _that_. The ftp://woodblock.com/incoming site will accept your print images with no password needed. The ID and password ... are only needed if you are away from your own email program, and wish to make a posting to the group. You can use _any_ computer - in an internet cafe, for example - and simply use the browser to type a message. The web pages for doing so are found at: http://woodblock.com (under the Administration Links section). The password is also needed if you are trying to add something to the 'Show & Tell' board - which is open to the internet, but is for the use of group members only. (Ahh, _that_ must be what Julio meant!) *** Jeanne wrote: > How many members do we have now, Dave. Yesterday there were 123 but overnight three joined and one left ... we now stand at 125.
