It was great to have you at the Graphics Center. I'm so glad you liked the show and thank you for your help putting up the last finishing touches. I also want to thank April and Sarah for all the work they did to make this show happen. The opening is tonight. I hope we get a good turn out. Judy ------------------------------ From: amoss@mindspring.com (John Amoss) Date: Sat, 9 Oct 1999 09:41:00 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [Baren 6172] Manhattan show Judy, Sarah, April and Ray- I'm sure I echo many of the exchange #1 participants in my wishing that I was nearer to Manhattan and to thank so each one of you for your work and initiative! Hope that there is a comments book at the show. I for one would like to hear what the viewers think. Thanks again! - -John A. ------------------------------ From: Shimizu Date: Sat, 09 Oct 1999 09:59:04 -0400 Subject: [Baren 6173] Matt and Dave in NH I sometimes explain my over-excited behavior to friends and family by describing it as a "hanga high" ...you know, those floating feelings you get when you look at the first proof, and like it? ... or when you stare at 30 prints you just completed... or get a great idea? Well I think yesterday's time spent with Dave and Matt will keep me up there for a long time. The morning started with the family sheep dog herding my car into a parking space in front of the pink barn/studio that Matt built. The studio is terrific; the first floor is the woodworking area with frames, letter presses and all sorts of goodies, then up stairs, across a gallery balcony into the print studio, a space bursting with creativity. The next three or four hours were spent talking shop... and of course the big treat, watching Dave print five copies of his Gakutei's exchange print. Cameras were busy so I imagine Dave will post some photos when he finds computer time. It was reassuring to find that the Dave we are meeting through the Baren Forum, and seeing in the video, is the same Dave that I was privileged to meet in person yesterday. I hope he doesn't mind if I share something he said, something that I've already written down and tacked onto my bulletin board. Dave's three points to being successful are: "To be good at what you do, to be passionate about what you do, and to share that passion". There was both sharing and passion in Matt's studio yesterday. Aren't we all fortunate to be in this world making woodblock prints! I left New Hampshire as Matt was leading Dave and company into the mountains for an autumn hike. (Hope we hear from them soon.) Have fun at the Opening tonight! Lynita, back in Connecticut ------------------------------ From: Gary Luedtke Date: Sat, 9 Oct 1999 10:48:39 -0400 Subject: [Baren 6174] Matt and Dave in NH Lynita, Thanks for sharing some of that experience with us. I look forward to hearing more detail about it, as you teased us with so little. Appreciation from fellow artists is better than chocolate. Coming from a chocoholic that's really great. Ruth ------------------------------ From: Shimizu Date: Sat, 09 Oct 1999 14:26:10 -0400 Subject: [Baren 6176] Re: Matt and Dave in NH Gee, Gary, considering how rarely I contribute to these great discussions, I thought my message this morning was rather verbose. So what do you want to hear, Matt's New England luncheon recipe or Dave's opinion of Matt's Rives paper? (The opened-faced, cheese, fresh tomato and relish? on hearty bread sandwich was delicious and the paper, which looks wonderful for Matt's prints wasn't so marvelous for Dave's.) One observation that struck both Matt and me was that although Dave wasted little time mixing pigments and printing, he patiently waited for the block to be moistened and the brushes primed before he started printing. Patience... that elusive trait I'm forever trying to achieve! Another new bit of information for me was that if one is printing a series and makes a mistake on a print in that series, that print should be left in sequence and should be printed for all following colors. When I mess up a print, I usually either toss it or pull it from the series and put it in the front to use when starting a new color, thinking that it is useful as a trial print. Not so smart! As the printing progresses, the block absorbs water and the prints actually get larger. If I were to pull a print out of sequence (and if my prints were as refined as Dave's) the registration, size, everything would be off. As my prints are not yet technical masterpieces, I doubt if I'll notice any difference if I continue my bad habits, however, just in case, I plan to change my ways. I hesitated to mention this earlier as I hate to add a somber note to our festive weekend, but our day was saddened yesterday by the news that Gayle's mother passed away. We had looked forward to meeting Gayle and her husband and missed their presence. Our thoughts are with you Gayle. So >what do you want to hear....?" First, and most importantly, let me add to the condolences for Gayle's mother. My deepest sympathy Gayle, on this saddest of occasions. I hope when you come to read your back mail, you know we were all thinking of you and this tragic news that has saddened us as well. Lynita, you do indeed contribute rarely to these discussions, therefore you have quite a lot to make up! I no more than got a taste of your Friday morning with Dave and Matt, and I presume Sadako and Matt's wife, whom I never have had the honor of hearing mentioned by name. This last posting was just a bit short on detail as well, Lynita, geez, what do we have to do to pry this information out of you???? :) O.K. perhaps a few questions to get you started. When did you get there? What was going on when you arrived? What happened then? It sounds as if Dave brought some work along to demonstrate? Did Matt demonstrate his techniques in turn? If Matt's prints work fine on Rives paper, how come Dave's don't? What is inherent in their respective techniques that causes this to be so? How do they print differently? Describe Matt's studio and the locale you found it in. Was Dave pretty much as we've seen him in the video, how tall is the lanky fellow? Are the materials, aside from the paper, pretty much alike that both Dave and Matt use? How long has Matt been doing woodblock prints? Where'd he learn? Is this Matt's sole livelihood, doing woodblock prints? What other common things do you see between Dave and Matt in their working habits? How long were you able to visit? After having had the opportunity to observe both Dave and Matt working, how do their workstyles compare to your earlier experience in the Japanese studio of Tokuriki? This ought to keep you busy for awhile, Lynita. Let's not be too short on the detail now! You are our camera's eye on the event, please develop all the pictures on your roll of memory for us in living color! These printmakers truly are the greatest! Graham, I saw several of your prints in the bins at the NWPC office and it reminded me of our great workshop. This internet thing is so fun..... I am interested. Any chance of sending on a sheet each of the two weights you have. (Send along a little invoice for ship and the two sheets,a nd some idea of how much you want to sell and for how much?) Matt I think Dave and Sadako are having a good time up here. Don't know whether he'll be taking time to get onto this machine or not. Matt Brown 23 Washburn Hill Rd. It has been a busy time for everyone these past few days. Lynita had written "I imagine Dave will post some photos when he finds computer time". We were going to do a little computer work last night but got talking and looking at prints (many real gems that Dave had brought with him) and never got to it. Maybe tonight. We've still got quite a list of 'tasks', stuff to talk about, etc. I think Dave and Sadako are both having a good visit. Unfortunately the leaf colors are not as brilliant this year . . . something to do with this summer's drought, etc., but they are happily set up in a house that Dave says is many times the size of his digs back in Tokyo, and we are having good weather.
