You can also get cherry veneer in 2ft by 8ft rolls with scotch brand pressure sensitive backed adhesive from cabinet refacing and woodworker supply stores. It is advisable to coat the substrate with laquer, let dry and after taking of the slick paper protective backing, apply the veneer with a simple masonite scraper device.Caution :...once applied it is virtually bonded. There are also heat sensitive, iron on veneers useually sold in strips for edgeing, but can be found in wider stock. edo ------------------------------ From: Vollmer/Yamaguchi Date: Mon, 27 Sep 1999 11:41:24 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [Baren 6006] Pyramid Atlantic I just returned from giving a hanga woodcut weekend workshop at Pyramid Atlantic, just outside Washington DC. It is a great print shop, offering classes, and they do print and paper projects with many artists, including hanga woodcut artists Hiroshi Yoshida and Keji Shinohara. Helen Frederick is the knowledgable and extremely nice Director. Great students, too, mostly printmakers who wanted to know more about the Japanese way of printing woodcut. They were all impressed with the accuracy of the kento registration, and loved the waterbase color. Some of them were long time printmakers looking for alternatives to solvent based printmaking. I met Shireen Holman there, and saw her incredible book. She not only printed a beautiful multi-colored finely textured woodcut, she made the paper and bound the book! (I was happy to hear she had help with the letterpress portion!) I think the book is up on her website (she's on baren) but to see it in person was really great. Unfortunately, she had hurt her hand, and was unable to take the class, but we were able to spend some time together talking shop. Thank you for the introduction, Dave!!! Sarah Hauser, Judy Mensch and I are planning to hang the first Baren Portfolio show at Manhattan Graphics this Monday morning. The opening will be a week from next Saturday, Oct. 9...hope some of you will come! I just received in the post copies of the handsome announcement cards for the upcoming [Baren] portfolio show at Manhattan Graphics Center. Very nice job, Judy and April. Just a quick question, which either of you may choose to answer off-line if you like: the show at MGC only comprises the work of those in the first exchange portfolio that ponied up for the special MGC membership rate, correct? The reason I ask is that someone interested in attending the show was asking me how many prints were being shown and I wasn't quite sure. At any rate, I hope a goodly number of [Baren] folks will come to the opening on the 9th. I plan to be there, as does Gayle... anybody else? Or should we let it be a surprise? Dave, feel like hopping on a plane? :-) Sla/inte, James Mundie ------------------------------ From: David Bull Date: Tue, 28 Sep 1999 07:53:25 +0900 Subject: [Baren 6008] Re: Pyramid Atlantic April wrote, about Pyramid Atlantic: > ... they do print and paper projects with many artists, including > hanga woodcut artists Hiroshi Yoshida and Keji Shinohara. April, Hiroshi Yoshida died in 1950. Do you maybe mean [Baren] member _Hideshi_ Yoshida? Or do you mean that they are carrying some of the Hiroshi Yoshida reprints that are still being pulled here in Tokyo? *** Philip Smith sent in a couple of links of interest to members ... http://www.carolynstaleyprints.com http://www.printfair.comĘ *** James wrote, about the Manhattan Graphics show: > At any rate, I hope a goodly number of [Baren] folks will come to the > opening on the 9th. Dave, feel like hopping on a plane? Sorry Jim, it's a bit too far away. I'll be a hundred miles away that weekend ... Here is something to think about for future exchanges. Could we, woodblock printmakers, start sharing with the world? Maybe expand our runs to twice the number of participants and offer the additional prints for collectors? < Date: Mon, 27 Sep 1999 17:50:42 -0700 Subject: [Baren 6011] Sharing our work with the world... What a great idea....maybe we can print extra prints from the exchanges and exhibit them as a portfolio, like the exhibit at Manhatten Graphics. I like the idea of the playing cards, could they be extra large? Could they fold into a book? There are lots of choices, aren't there? Could they hang together on your large paper, Maria? Did you find large paper? We could cut slots and put them in like photos at the corners...? So many ideas, so little time. If you don't have the stuff that's made for the job you can use a heavy asitait. between this and the roller there should be some packing, a piece of heavy bloating paper or even better if there is room (there isn't on my press) a sheet of natural rubber will give you just the right impression. You can never have to meany presses my advice is to keep buying them at this rate until you can no longer get into your studio John Ryrie ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V8 #721 ***************************
