Finally we get to see you and your work. Very nice, indeed. I like the skeleton, too, since some of my woodcuts are of skeletons. I did one of a lady dancing out the door with one, and also another skeleton in meditation. Medusa and the Lady of Perpetual Guilt are both strong pieces. I'm partial to black and white. I very much like the loose quality of your knife strokes. The gesture of your figures is especially attractive, Bea. It gives the wonderful feeling of resting in a hammock on a hot summer day. I wonder, did you ink it with open color? I mean, you did not use separate color blocks for each color, did you? The depth is wonderful. (Another artist who is good at depth is Greg.) Jean Eger ------------------------------ From: Michelle Morrell Date: Thu, 12 Aug 1999 12:10:51 -0800 Subject: [Baren 5250] Exchange Techniques I was so delighted to get the 2nd exchange prints and have shared them with a friend who has been making prints for years and years. Neither of us came up with satisfactory guesses of how the following two pieces where done. If the artists should read this, maybe they will clue us in? Ray Hudson-- How did you get that wounderful varied-hue background on "Lilac Sail?" We thought maybe you had bruised the wood and done a melded pigment roll on a background plank--is that anywhere in the ballpark? Love the effect. David Afsah-Mohallatee--Is the black paper glued to the white paper in "Chamber" or it is sticking with its own sizing? And did you use any ink at all in printing the heart or is it just the pressure of the heart block on the black paper that smishes through to the white paper and makes a white/grey tone pattern? You have achieved some wonderful texture here! Among other things, I loved the smell of the exchange--had forgotten the exciting odor of oil-based relief ink on "rice" paper. Thanks Gabrielle and all the rest of you who told me how to make the sky with variation. Gayle ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V8 #659 ***************************
