I tried something interesting yesterday by putting a layer of deep pink on the paper first, then a blue which with hand pressure was heaviest at the top and lighter at the bottom so the pink showed through like the light at the horizon, and that worked fairly well, too, giving a depth to the sky. * * * I got my package of prints. Thanks, John, for all you did. I very much like the quality of work and I like the small size of the prints. They are jewels. I'll wait to talk about them--after Dave gets them up for all to see. I feel proud to see my print among all the others, makes me feel a part of something wonderful and special. I especially liked the background and colors in Dave's print, wow, such a delicate wood grain texture and mica? dust. The print with the green background and jungle like feel, wow! what colors and life. The one with the calm desert road into the distance. Jean and Jeanne's ... James's beautiful style and imagery. I could go on with all others. Wonderful work all you talented people. Also - I had a chance to view Pete's, Lezle's & Gabrielle's work yesterday - each person w/a very different style but all great to look at - thanks! Lezle - would be interested to find out more about the wildlife work that you do, as this is an interest of mine as well. best to all, Sarah ------------------------------ From: Elizabeth Atwood Date: Sat, 7 Aug 1999 16:57:40 -0400 Subject: [Baren 5199] Exchange #2 Just received my package of prints.......have had only a quick run-thru....and I'm looking forward to a long browse this evening. When I spoke out against 'me too' postings, I was just trying to help keep down the number of 'empty' postings. If you've got something to say - please say it! *** John R. asked: > Also could someone tell me, dose the Print exchange #3 have a theme? To clarify here: Exchange #1 and #2 had no themes. #3, which still has room for a few more people, is also 'open' in theme. It is #4 (which has not yet started registration) which will be the 'self-portrait' theme. http://woodblock.com/forum/exchange_sign-up.html *** Barnaby wrote: > I was wondering if anyone out there knows > where to get hold of those beautiful, densely bristled traditional Japanese > brushes > They could be bought at the Art Supplies shop at the Kyoto Seika University, > but I don't have the Japanese language skills to initiate an inquiry or order. A number of [Baren] members have reported success ordering supplies from Woodlike Matsumura here in Tokyo, sending in their orders via email in simple English. His English-language catalogue is not quite ready yet (but getting closer, it seems), but some contact info is in the Encyclopedia at: http://woodblock.com/encyclopedia/topics/007/007_frame.html *** John wrote, re the case for the exchange: > Dave, maybe Toda-san can make them a little deeper to accomodate the > thicker papers? I thought we _had_ done so ... but I obviously miscalculated. But considering that each Exchange from now on will have the same number of prints (nearly, anyway), it shouldn't be too hard to finally establish a suitable thickness. When I get mine, I'll take it over to him so that he can _see_ what we've got, and can thus get it closer next time. Dave ------------------------------ From: "Jean Eger" Date: Sun, 8 Aug 1999 08:19:21 +0900 Subject: [Baren 5201] Gabrielle, Let me add my welcome to the others'. I visited your web site and was just bowled over by the beauty and expressiveness of your prints. I like the way you said that the purpose of your prints is to reproduce a moment of serenity. I myself strive to create beautiful landscapes, but I have so much to learn. I am humble before you and Mary Krieger and Greg Robinson, among others.] Also, I appreciate learning about your techniques. You must have access to a very large roller. Perhaps you do your work at a college or university? Those big rollers cost so much. I have often wondered if I could make one out of a large cylinder of some kind. Perhaps one of the Bareners has some ideas on that. Hi Jean, I read your post about the rollers and want you to know I did my print with a roller that is 2" in diameter and 5" long. The trick is to use almost no pressure when rolling the roller over your woodblock. Get you ink rolled out on a slab of glass or whatever you have, then ink up your roller and then use only the weight of the roller to put the ink on the woodblock. Go over it as many times as you need to, adding inke again to the roller as needed. Sometimes it takes 5-10 minutes to lay the ink down. The light pressure assures you will have no roller marks on your plate. This is for oil based ink. I learned this from George Johansen, a locally famous printmaker and painter. He taught at Pacific NW College of Art for 30 years and is retired now. He is a wonderful instructor and a great loss to the students, but he wants more time for his own work. I thought your print was wonderful, so much nicer to see then in person than to see then on the screen. Keep printing! My best to you, Barbara ------------------------------ From: Barbara Mason Date: Sat, 07 Aug 1999 17:18:41 -0700 Subject: [Baren 5203] Exchange #2 Well, this is a treat! 28 prints from all over. Only a printmaker could be this excited about getting a box in the mail. The mailman brought it to the door and I ripped it out of his hands, he must have thought I was a little strange. All the work is wonderful, some more mature than others, but all wondereful. This exchange is so much fun and as we are forced to do more woodcuts to keep doing future exchanges we will see great growth......What an exciting opportunity for us all. Lee always says "there are no bad pancakes, just different varieties of good ones" and I sure feel that way about prints. I can never see enough of them and having them for my own is even better. We printmakers are a little obsessed. Thanks again John, for all your hard work and expense of mailing these prints. Were we supposed to send postage for out prints? If so, I owe you mine as I did not think of it. Best to all you printers, keep up the good work! Barbara ------------------------------ From: David Bull Date: Sun, 08 Aug 1999 09:44:06 +0900 Subject: [Baren 5205] Re: Exchange postage ... Barbara wrote: > Were we supposed to send postage for our prints? > If so, I owe you mine as I did not think of it. Barbara - most definitely we are supposed to send John the money for the postage! My apologies if this wasn't spelled out more carefully. I haven't met John yet, but I think I can guess something about his personality - and I doubt he will be 'bugging' those who neglected to include their postage money. So let me do it for him: would any people who didn't include money for the return postage when they sent their prints to John, please send it to him forthwith. Volunteering to be exchange coordinator will always involve quite an investment of time - that's part of the job - but it should never involve money expenses too. Thanks *** Philip wrote: > I don't know anything about the 'exchange', > who is the coralator and can I participate in the next one? Dave, I did not scroll down the page far enough as I was a late addition replacing someone who dropped out of the exchange. I stopped at the size of the paper and got busy. My appologies to John, who never would say anything. You are right about this. I will send my check immediately. The work is great!
