First, if anyone is interested in giving it a try- it is available through McClains at quite a reasonable cost (especially compared to the hardwoods) and they also carry a booklet about engraving on Resingrave and synthetics. Also, Barry Moser has a children's book called "What you Know First" which is the first book done entirely with Resingrave. I have been using it almost exclusively for my engravings for about 2 years. I learned engraving on it because of its price economy, but now prefer it over the wood (don't tell the traditionalists). It has a slicker feel to it (a bit like the difference between a linocut and woodcut) and is easier to cut than the woods- I find that I can cut more quickly on it. It holds the delicate lines just as easily, and prints just as cleanly. A slight drawback is that one has to carve delicately with the tools and to be sure to switch to a wider tool for a wider line- rather than applying more pressure because it has a tendency to chip on the edges of the lines when too much pressure is applied. This, I actually use to my benefit - I like to get in there and gouge for a more graphic feel- something that I can't do with the wood. If you are curious enough to look up a sample- I have a couple engravings posted at Care-mail: http://www.care-mail.com/send/categories.shtml?a=1122 - the ones entitled "Montana" and "Lone Tree" or Art Hire.com: http://www.arthire.com/cgi-bin/ArtHire$AH?Page=E_Browser&ArtistIndex=1&Sampl eIndex=2 (first three pictures). (If for some reason they can't be accessed thru these links- go to the main page and type in "Lezle Williams" in the artist search block.) Hope this helps... I didn't know we had so many wood (resin) engravers on Baren. I can see how they would overlap in several areas. Very interesting to hear about all of this. What the heck is "Multiples"? A magazine for letterpress fans? They said some words in Japanese over and over, which sounded like "Gingko doctor." Dave, what does that mean? Last night I dreamed about being poisoned by paint thinner and nitric acid fumes. In my dream I vowed that if I were allowed to live, I would give up all but water-based woodcut and watercolor. And drawing. I'm recharging my batteries with some watercolors. Say hello to Himi and Fumi for me. Jean ------------------------------ From: David Bull Date: Sun, 01 Aug 1999 10:36:17 +0900 Subject: [Baren 5114] Re: TV broadcast ... Anyway, it was only a short 7~8 minute clip ... nothing to waste a lot of time over. > They said some words in > Japanese over and over, which sounded like "Gingko doctor." Dave, what does > that mean? You've got me there ... It doesn't seem to make any sense at all ... > Say hello to Himi and Fumi for me. Fumi-chan is in a cast at the moment, having hurt her knee at the rink last week. So that means maybe a lot more scanning!
