I particularly can relate to the world looking like a woodblock print. Whenever I have been studying anything in art very diligently, the world looks like the thing I've been studying. Once I saw everything as line. Another time as values. Then color became unbelievably beautiful and subtle. I feel doing art opens our eyes in a way most people (who don't do art) will not know. The most disgusting things become interesting, the lovely things become celestial. Thanks for sharing with us. * * John, thanks for the clarificaiton about the protective card when carving. Do any of the rest of your Bareners use a card to cover lines you don't want bumped by your tools? If not, what method do you use? I have been wondering about the need...... and why you and now John find the need for a piece of card. Are you using the correct tool to do the job. Are you using the bull nose 'Aisuki' correctly. Have you sharpened the wrong angle on the aisuki. One at a time here, Graham . I use the aisuki to clear away wood along the edge of a 'to' cut line. I make sure that the angle is slightly TOWARD the 'to' cut edge. I carefully ease the wood up and away from the cut line. If you use the aisuki in a manner that you are cutting AWAY (angle) from the 'to' cut line then for sure the ferral is going to mar the edge. If you have not made a 'to' cut first and are using the aisuki to cut a line...you will have marring problems. Going in or starting a cut is no problem.....its when you want to exit from the wood that requires you to lower the handle so the blade finds it's way up and out.....and the ferral hits the wood. The easiest way is to use a U gouge 'Komasuki' and all will be fine. When you use this you do not have to use the 'to' first. The Komasuki will cut a good edge and at the proper angle. Ah ha ....the end of problem. On sharpening.....if you have sharpened the aisuki .... reducing the angle ....then this requires that you have to lower the handle to exit the wood and causes the ferral to dig and mar the wood. Sharpen your tool at a slightly greater angle help prevent this. On more thought......Using a tilted Hori-dai. The thingie I designed does keep the angle of your plate such that marring the block is more problematical. Go to : http://www.members.home.net/gscholes/wksp2.html They are fairly easy to make as per the discription I posted a week or so ago. Hope somebody kept that.!!!!!! Coming full circle....If the card works .....what the hell, go for it. Dozens of his prints are on-line - this is a great chance to get a survey of his work ... (I'm repelled by the prices mentioned, but anyway, the work itself is there to learn from ...) *** Gayle wrote: > Why are John's messages appearing twice? Most subscribers who get the 'regular' version of [Baren] (as opposed to the 'digest' version) can decode such messages with no trouble, but they are a real problem for the digest ... It is very much recommended that member try and avoid using HTML code in your messages to the list. (Most email programs allow you to have messages sent as 'straight text'). *** Gayle also asked about using the clearing chisels, and Graham answered her in words ... So here's an answer in a picture - the most common way to use the 'aisuki'. http://woodblock.com/encyclopedia/entries/005_03/images/colr06mini.jpg Dave ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V8 #633 ***************************
