This is what I was thinking about - how about using dampened Japanese paper - I have a lot of miscellaneous pieces around that would be the right size- Also, the carving rig you described sounds interesting, but can you really get the intense leverage that you need to do heavy clearing, etc.? Thanks to all for the Acrobat site! It's still hot here in NYC - I think I should move to Canada! You sure can. Some of my 24" plates attest to that. >It's still hot here in NYC - I think I should move to Canada! Its a bargin up here when you have US bucks. Otherwise it is expensive. OK, here's a real treat for you ... courtesy very quiet [Baren] member Tom Weideman (whose book it is), and my two daughters (who scanned it all in) ... 'Colour Woodcuts', by Mr. John Platt (published in 1948) is now included in its entirety in the Encyclopedia Library. All those of you who have asked questions about the Japanese methods of printmaking - ask no more! (at least not until you've read Mr. Platt's extremely informative book) He covers the whole thing - design, carving, printing ... tools and supplies ... everything you need to know to make these kind of woodblock prints. An extensive appendix section includes images of dozens of his prints, some of which are incredible examples of work. Look at the 'planes' in Plate #1 !!! For those of you who wish to keep your own copy, I have also prepared download packages that include the entire book, including all the plates. (As usual, in both Mac and Win versions) Thanks very much to Tom, Himi and Fumi for this! You can reach the book from the Encyclopedia updates page: http://woodblock.com/encyclopedia/updates.html ... and the download copies can be found at: http://woodblock.com/download.html This now makes _four_ complete books on the Japanese techniques available in our Library ... Tokuno, Yoshida, Fletcher, and Platt. With this kind of information available to them, anybody who can't figure out how to make good woodblock prints is simply in the wrong business ... Get reading! I have been looking through the library and archives for all kinds of information since I joined Baren. I know that I haven't read 1/2 of it all yet! Yesterday, I stumbled onto the download page. You just think of everything David! Also, I discovered that the plastic ties work great on the handle, at least until you can get it all twisted and tied with string. I am going to try to draw a picture of the fancy knot that was in my original baren from McClain's, and upload it to my web site. It'll take a couple of years before the moisture content has stabilized enough for it to be used for carving. *** The following information was received, and may be of interest to some [Baren] members ... > I MINI-PRINT INTERNATIONAL SHOW =96 VIT=D3RIA 2000 > The I Mini-Print International Show =96 Vit=F3ria 2000 has as > objective to diffuse and promote the development of > Printmaking.
