I'm off to cycle through the west of Ireland for three weeks starting Sunday night, so I'll be unsubscribing for a bit. I look forward to slogging through all of the lovely woodblock info in the archives when I return. John, not to worry. I will shortly be boxing up my Exchange prints and having a friend send them on to you after I depart. Keep up the flow of information while I'm gone! A zillion laughs and ton of information. Three are still here, John, Wanda and Barbara, doing some sightseeing this afternoon. They promise to leave tomorrow morning ...... we will see ..... they keep asking questions and we end up in the studio checking things......we are threatening to change the locks. You will know doubt here all about their experience. They are saying they want to come back next year and we are to give them first refusal. Will put you down for next year bhearn....and as soon as I get a few matters scheduled then you will certainly hear all about it.... There will be more stuff on the Site so keep looking in. http://www.members.home.net/gscholes/wksp.html John and I took a good series of images about wet stones and sharpening. It may take a day or two to get loaded. Right now I've got an appointment with a bed. About three or four....depending on which end of the bamboo. The tip end is thinner and allows more folds. >Also do you start the twist in the tail as you tuck and fold? All the tuck and folds have to be completed on on half and then you twist the tail. You twist just enough to hold the fold in place. When both halfs are folded then the twisting of the tail gets serious. You want to twist them tight as possible and then tie them off. >I hope all there are soaking in the knowledge as well as the beauty of the >Great Northwest. While looking at seaswirl, I saw a wonderful little print by our Sarah Hauser on the same page. I suppose everyone else has already seen it but I feel moved to comment--it is so wonderfully whimsical. And Matt, nice to hear from you again. I know one of your Horizons students, Deb DiCicco. She works at the Sharon Arts Center, VERY nice person. I worked with her there a couple of years ago and she has a sincere interest in hanga. Your student's prints (including Deb's beautiful irises) on the web look great! How big are they? And did you use plastic barens for that class? I am going to take 2 to my Horizons class, I think. Thanks for the tip about the Japanese supplier, but I've already got them, thanks to Barbara. I am looking forward to going to Mass. to teach for a week, New York City is beginning to get rather hot and humid. I've enjoyed the website for over a year but never got around to joining. If time permits, please visit my site at: http://billfisher.dreamhost.com It is an Art Department Directory, so please feel free to help with expanding the site. I hope to have Japan included soon. I have so many happy memories my years in Tokyo. For those of you still on the islands, you have my deepest jealousy. Best to you all, Bill ------------------------------ From: Mariten@aol.com Date: Sun, 27 Jun 1999 00:00:43 EDT Subject: [Baren 4766] Re: Baren Qs From Maria in LV Nice work on the website, Graham! Thanks for the beautiful photos on covering the baren. How thick is the backing disk? How thick is the coil? The whole baren looks like it's about 3/8" without the bamboo covering? I don't own a real one and am attempting to make one out of Southwest materials. Don't laugh, Dave; if the Hopi would have done woodcuts instead of the Japanese, EVERYONE would have jute barens : ) Prints for Exchange #2 are off to John's! A gallery in Las Vegas checked out my website and would like me to come by with a portfolio. They were surprised that anyone was doing woodcuts right here in sin-city and want to maybe add the medium to their shows. Wish me luck. Also wish I had been there in person for the famous and mysterious replacing of the bamboo sheath - timely for me as I've just been reading whatever I can to psych myself up to change my baren cover - I think I'll try it soon! - my baren sheath is currently being held together with scotch tape! best to all, Sarah ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V7 #609 ***************************
