I don't know if you got your questions answered, there are lot of folks away right now, Dave, Gayle, the guys over at Graham's class and all the people busy working on completing their exchange print #2. I am a rookie at all of this so I don't know if I can help directly. Keep searching the encyclopedia, I remember Dave putting a couple of lessons about baren use and proper technique. also under pigment application. If you are using sufficient pressure with the baren but not getting satisfying results, it could be related to the way or amount of pigment & paste application to the wood block. I don't know what or how you are using it, but it does not take much to get a decent proof on just about any kind of paper, with just about any kind of pigment......how are you applying the color to the wood ? Regards.....Julio ------------------------------ From: Sherpsm@aol.com Date: Fri, 25 Jun 1999 14:37:53 EDT Subject: [Baren 4752] Re: The workshop stuff Graham The Baren covering lesson is great. And prompts a question or two. May I ask how many tucks are usually made in each quarter before the twist starts? Also do you start the twist in the tail as you tuck and fold? I hope all there are soaking in the knowledge as well as the beauty of the Great Northwest. Thanks for putting the photos up! Did you get the program working, or did you do it the old fashioned way with a scanner? Barabara's smile really lights up the room! Amazing to see Greg, all the way from Kampala to woodcutting Mecca, Wanda in the corner, John's making another unsurpassed animal picture. I have Marco's postcard for his show in San Francisco. Maybe I can make it to the reception July 9th. What incredible talent! Great to meet Marnie! I came home from the first chemo treatment, no nausea yet. I've been working on Exchange #3 because I forgot to put the Kento mark in when I cut the block. It's looking good... If I lie down, I'll start thinking about all my aches and pains, so I am trying to keep going. Great to see your beautiful studio, and all the baren members working hard. I love the photos of baren tying. I will have to try it myself. John Amoss' turtle looks great. My Lower East Side Printshop class started last night, a very nice group. We shall see which of my nine students gets the hanga bug. I am so impressed that Graham is able to cover the complexities of baren tying and bristle-breaking. You in his class are lucky to have someone willing to skin a shark for you! April, Plastic disc baren from Daniel Smith or (for a better price) Matsumara-san. If you are buying several for Elderhostel workshop it would be worth the effort to find the links on Dave's Pedia and e-mail Matsumara-san, etc. Disc baren has advantage in, being plastic, being more tolerant of moisture variety in papers and not requiring close attention to oil or slip papers (also no re-covering, though the discs do wear out and need replacing (approx. $10). For months I have wanted to report on a trip to England back in March, following Dave's path to the Print Room of the V & A, meeting up with the editor of "Printmaking Today", Roger Farrand, . . . but now this is so far in the past . . . Also was quite excited to post to Baren after doing a workshop at the Horizons down in Mass. back in May, but I didn't get to that either! Have put up images of prints made by all the students (4 students, 4 prints, 3 days, lot of fun) in The Studio section of my "ooloopress.com" web-site ("Horizons-1999). Maybe the work can be inspiration/ food for talk/ for Graham, John, Wanda, Gregory and the rest of his workshop.
